slow twitch fibers are where the fiber contracts slowly with less force they are slow to fatigue and suited to longer duration aerobic activities. they have higher capacity of aerobic respiration they are recruited for lower intensity but longer duration work such as swimming and long distance running.

advantages - it allows us to work aerobically for longer periods of time, this helps us to do things such as run, swim, cycle and walk for long periods of time.

disadvantages - if your in a sport that requires both fast and slow twitch fibers then if a defender only has slow twitch then they wont be able to catch a striker sprinting to score a goal.

sporting disciplines associated slow twitch - long distance running, swimming, cycling and walking are examples of this.

this type of muscle fiber is better suited to anaerobic activity. These fibers contract rapidly causing them to fatigue easily, this is why they are suited to anaerobic work. This type of muscular fiber is used in high intensity and short periods of work. the main reason why these are important with in physical activity is because they allow a quick change in pace, for example- a foot baller when they have to use a short burst of power to either jump and head the ball or even just and injection of pace in order to chase back an opposition player.

these are fast fibers the contract quickly producing a great force. they are moderately resistant to fatigue this means they are less resistant than slow twitch fibres but they are more resistant than fast-glycolytic muscle fibres. these muscle fibres are more suited to middle distance events like 800m for example

They have a quick contraction speed, this means that in sports like football you can accelerate quickly because of the quick contractions.
fast-oxidative fibres are used for aerobic metabolism, and are able to use either glucose or fats as a source of energy which means that if you havent eaten for a long time they can still work well.
it last longer than glycolytic fibers when it comes to aerobic fitness so it is more use fell for sports such as rugby.
