Authentic Activities

For an authentic activity, the students would take a bus out to Camp Floyd Museum close to Fairfield City. The site used to be Camp Floyd during the Utah War in the 1850's. Luckily, the Camp offers free dig sites where students can dig and find artifacts from the era. The students will also have an opportunity to see musket fire, march in an army simulation, and tour the grounds. The greatest thing about this for a history class is it helps students to visualize where the events took place rather than just hearing about it from the teacher. Students will then be able to create a story about the artifact they found and what it's journey was with the army

For the service-based learning students will have an opportunity to conduct their own oral interviews with residents of rest homes or other care-based places. The students will then be able to compile their interviews to draw conclusions about the war that they choose to focus on. The students will be able to choose Vietnam, The Gulf War, War in Afghanistan or Iraq, and any other conflicts in the last 20 years. The students will also experience fantastic perspective from elders who actually experienced war on the front lines.

Students will choose a founding father, based on the game which determines which founding father they might be. They will have a project based on how life prepared the founding fathers to found a nation. They will research where the founding fathers found their inspiration, their personal histories, the role they had in the revolution, and why they were important to the foundation of America Democracy. Students will then participate in a debate in the classroom where they put forth the ideas that their founding father would have pushed, but make it about the current school system.

For the inquiry learning activity students will answer the question, "Why does history matter right now?" Students will then engage in multiple websites which engage the purpose of history in learning. Students will then create their own blog that analyzes a specific event in history and why it matters to them. They will then turn in a presentation where they present to a incoming college class on why they should take historical classes.
