1. What is it that you are doing?

We tested different elements by putting them in fire and seeing what color comes that element makes.

2. Why does this happen? (Why do elements produce colors when they are in a bunsen burner flame? Use phrases like ground state, excited state, electrons, energy levels).

Elements produce colors when they are put in the bunsen burner because of the electrons. The more electrons the element has the brighter the color.

Before anything we put our safety googles then we got the bunsen burner and connected it to the gas. Then we got a match and put it on top and turned on the gas shortly after. Then quickly blew on the match and put it in the sand. We then got the popsicle stick with the element and held in the fire.

4. What happened? (data table with color descriptions, names, formulas of ions, including your unknown)

The different chemicals recated with the flame differently by making different colors. For example copper gave off a greenish flame and calcium gave off a reddish flame

5. How did you determine your unknown chemical? (What was your unknown ion? Why do you think that it is that ion?)

The ESLR's used in the activity were work well with others, demonstrate proficiency in writing and speaking, locate, interpret, evaluate, organize, process and present
information using technology or appropriate resources. Our group worked well with eachother while in the lab. As we did the lab and used the bunsen burner and burned the elements we talked about the colors we saw and wrote them down on our data table. locate,interpret,evaulate,organize,process and present information using technology or appropriate resources was another ESLR we used because we used the bunsen burner and other things to work on this lab and performed it in class.
