He was best known for his books Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-four (1949), later of which is a profound anti-utopian work that explores the risks of totalitarian government.

After been awarded scholarships to two of the best schools in England, Wellington and Eton, Orwell briefly attended the former before continuing his studies there from 1917 until 1921. Following family tradition, Orwell chose to go to Burma as an assistant district superintendent in the Indian Imperial Police in 1922 rather than enrolling at a university. He worked at several rural stations and, at first, seemed to be a perfect example of an imperial servant. Despite this, he had always aspired to be a writer. He also felt increasingly humiliated of his position as a colonial police officer when he understood how much the Burmese were subjected to British rule against their choice.
