Standard:  

1R.1 – Develop and answer questions about key ideas and details in a text.

Make simple inferences by using picture clues and prior knowledge to explain what is happening in a story. 

Show students a picture (ex: a child holding an umbrella under a cloudy sky). Ask: 

• “What do you think is happening?” 

• “Why do you think that?” Students will respond with: 

“I think ___ because I see ___.” 

Repeat with 2–3 different pictures to build confidence and practice. 

Give students a short picture-based worksheet with 2 images. 

Ask them to write one sentence for each: 

“I think ___ because I see ___.” 

Check for use of evidence and logical reasoning.
