It is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by a vibrant urban landscape.

In the past, this lake was called "Luc Thuy Lake," or "Green Lake" in English, because the water always stayed green throughout the year. Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as "Lake of the Returned Sword,". The name "Hoan Kiem" comes from a story in the 15th century. According to the legend, King Le Loi received a sword from a golden turtle living in the lake. King Le Loi used this sword to defeat his enemy, the Ming Dynasty of China, and returned home in victory.

One day, while the king was boating on the lake, the

turtle appeared and asked for the sword. This is why the lake is called "Hoan Kiem Lake.

Because of this legend, the turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake is highly respected. In the past, there was a real turtle that lived in the lake, believed to be an incarnation of the magical turtle from the lake's history.

Well as you see, in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, on a bustling street filled with shops and motorbikes, there is a house that has came over a century of history. This is Ma May Heritage House, an evidence of Vietnam’s history.

Built in the late 19th century, the house originally belonged to a wealthy merchant’s family. Back then, Hanoi was a thriving trade hub, and the narrow, deep “tube houses” were designed to maximize space in the crowded city. The house is long, with multiple rooms connected by a peaceful courtyard, where sunlight filters in and a small garden thrives. This courtyard was not just for beauty—it helped keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Over time, the house changed hands many times. By 1954, after Vietnam’s independence from French colonial rule, it became home to several families at once. For decades, its wooden beams and tiled floors carried the weight of generations.

In 1999, with support from France, the house was carefully restored to its original design, preserving its antique furniture, wooden carvings, and traditional Vietnamese charm. Today, it is open to visitors who want to step back in time and experience life in old Hanoi.

In the old days, in the heart of the bustling Hanoi Old Quarter, there was a house bearing the mark of time, the ancient house at 87 Ma May. This is one of the rare ancient houses that still retains the traditional architecture of the ancient Hanoians.

This house was built in the 19th century 1890 to be exact , when Ma May street was a crowded place for merchants. Through many historical changes, the house still stands firm, as a living witness of Hanoi in its golden age.

Located on Ma May street, Hoàn Kiếm district, which used to be a neighborhood of Chinese (phố người Hoa cũ hàng buồm) and Vietnamese merchants, the house has the typical architectural style of old Hanoi tube houses: a narrow but deep facade, with a skylight in the middle for light and ventilation.

Why is it called Mã Mây?...

The name Ma May is also associated with the history of the old quarter. In the old days, this place was home to shops selling horse saddles (Mã) and rattan and bamboo weaving establishments (Mây). Although these two professions have faded away, the name Ma May still exists as a mark of the past. Ma May ancient house exists today not only to preserve its architectural value but also to remind future generations of an elegant, quiet Hanoi of the past. That is why it was restored in 1999 and opened to visitors, becoming a must-see destination when exploring Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Do you know where coffee comes from? Coffee originated from Ethiopia, but the French brought the coffee plants to Vietnam in the 19th century. With the tropical climate here, Vietnam became one of the world's largest coffee producers. We mainly produce Robusta because of our climate.

Coffee is a beverage that's familiar to all of us, but have you ever thought about combining coffee with eggs? Sounds strange, right? But in Vietnam, that’s very special coffee attracting the attention of people from all over the world.

The story behind egg coffee started in the 1940s when a bartender in Hanoi- Mr Giảng created a unique coffee to serve customers. Back then, fresh milk was scarce. Instead of milk, he came up with a creamy egg foam, when mixed with strong coffee, created a rich and smooth flavor. And that's how egg coffee was born.

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a place where history, culture, and local life come together, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage. One of the most iconic landmarks is Dong Xuan Market, which was established in 1889 during the French colonial period. Named after the Dong Xuan Ward, the market has been a bustling trading center for over a century. Today, it remains one of the largest markets in Hanoi, selling everything from clothing and fabrics to souvenirs and delicious street food.

Not far from the market is the Ma May Ancient House, a well-preserved traditional house built in the 1880s. Originally owned by a merchant family, the house showcases the typical architecture of old Hanoi, with a narrow facade, wooden interiors, and an open courtyard. In 1999, it was restored as part of a collaboration between Vietnam and France to preserve the city’s cultural heritage. Now, it serves as a cultural site where visitors can experience the daily life of Hanoians in the past.

A trip to the Old Quarter would not be complete without enjoying egg coffee one of Vietnam’s most famous beverages. Coffee was introduced to Vietnam by the French in the 19th century, and over time, the Vietnamese developed their own unique brewing methods. Egg coffee was created in Hanoi in the 1940s by Nguyen Van Giang, a bartender who used whipped egg yolk as a substitute for milk during its shortage. This creamy and rich coffee, which tastes like a coffee-flavored custard, has now become a symbol of Hanoi’s creativity and coffee culture.

With its vibrant markets, well-preserved historical sites, and unique culinary creations, Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a must-visit destination for those who want to explore the soul of Vietnam.

In the Old Quarter, there are totally 36 streets. Almost streets were named according to the stuff that all the people on that street sold in the past. For example, all the people on a street sold chicken, they named the street to be chicken street. And Ma means horse, the second meaning is fake stuff and paper gold, paper money. May means clouds, the second meaning is a plant to make baskets. Then people connected 2 street into 1. it was named Ma May street. The French went it to my hometown in 19th century. And over many years, Vietnamese people have created egg coffee.

Do you know who brought coffee to Vietnam? The French

The French grew coffee in the North of Vietnam first. Then, they moved gradually to the West and the South. Because the weather and the soil are suitable for the coffee trees.

There are 3 kinds of coffee: Robusta, Arabica and Liberica.

Robusta: Bitter and strong => Vietnam is the country exporting Robusta the most in the World.

Arabica: (Pour over): Sour, Bitter => Brazil is the country exporting Arabica the most in the World.

Because robusta is strong and bitter. Therefore, Vietnamese people tried to mix with other ingredients when drinking coffee like condense milk, coconut, salt, and so on.

There was a man who work for Metropole Hotel in Hanoi. That's the first 5-star hotel in Hanoi. At that time, milk or coconut were rare and expensive because we were under the French war. Vietnam is a tropical country. Agriculture was our main field. We had a lot of chicken with rice. That man tried to mix the egg yolk to make egg cream. That's the place he invented/created egg coffee.
