The book start with Steve Jamison trying to track down Bill Walsh to talk to him about a book. Steve found him very quickly becuase Bill was running a successful chain of golf courses. Once Steve got an interview with Bill he was pleasantly surprised. Bill liked the idea of the book but it had to be on his terms. He was not always friendly towards the media so Steve was happy with how the meeting went. They started to work on it that day. They worked for about an hour then Steve asked Bill about some of his coaching peers and he gave them some props. Then right after kicked Steve out. This is the same way he would react during media days in the NFL. He would kinda shut down. Well Bill knew this to so he apologized the next day and had him come back. Bill would do this a few times when working on the book. Steve never took it personal. The whole story of Bill Walsh becoming a football coach is very late. He always knew what he wanted to do. It wasn't always easy to get a better coaching job. When the time did come and the 49ers called they were a complete train wreck. They were not winning, making money, adding talent or any building towards the future. Once Bill was hired he changed everything. He set a standard for performance for everyone in the organization and held people accountable for everything they do. From the top to the bottom of the whole place had to be running smooth or he would find a way to fix it.

The 49ers first year with head coach Bill Walsh was not a pretty won for the team. They didn't not win more then 2 games and it was humiliating to Bill Walsh. The 49ers at the time were still in love with Bill because he changed the culture and they were heading in the right direction. Bill was on thin ice in his mind. He had full control of the team he was GM and head coach so it was all gonna be on him. He took this pressure very serious. He didn't want to be mediocre so bad that the first year he almost quit becuase he thought he was a disgrace to the team. He ended sticking it out. In the draft after the season one of the most intriguing duos of all-time was formed. The 49ers drafted Joe Montana they would have a polarizing relationship. They would win 3 super bowls together. They were never friends or anything more then just working together. This has produced better results with many great quarterbacks. You can't be friends with your team if ruins the sense or order in the organization. Which you have to appreciate the dedication winning. Bill and the 49ers would slowly start there climb the next few year drafting very good talent after 3 years the 49ers would win a super bowl. Bill would not stop there. He was very good at getting the most out of people.

Bill Walsh- He was 75 with he passed in 2007 to leukemia. He was one of the most important coaches of all time. When every coach was from the Lombardi or Don Shula, Tom Laundry he managed to create his own legacy and his own way to do it. He was very progressive as a coach he lead the NFL into the passing league. One of the most notable people in NFL history.
Steve Jamison- He was the author in this book. It took a lot for Steve to get this book to come out. They had it written and ready then Bill took a job to come back to the 49ers and he wouldn't let the book come out yet. He would work for the 49ers in till a few days before he died. Steve didn't know if Bill wanted it out so a few years passed and Steve talked to Bill's son and his son said that people needed to read it. Steve was very respectful of Bill's wishes for the book. He treated it like it was Bill's book.
Joe Montana- He was Bill's most important player but was never put on the spot to make him seem any more important then any other. It created what should be every coach and QB relationship should be. High regard for each other but not friends. Joe is in the book because he knew Bill very well which not to many people did because he didn't have many friends that were close to him.

The setting in this book is in San Francisco for most of it. They do travel for games. San Fran is important because it was not a football kind of city in till Bill Walsh came. He turned the city into huge fans. There would be times when the team would travel to cities around the US.

Conflict 1- Person vs Self. Bill was struggling in his first season as a head coach his team was not very good. He was torn apart and thought he needed to quit. He did not quit after the season and his dynasty began.
Conflict 2- Person vs Person. Bill had told Steve to not release the book unless he was fired by the 49ers. Well he died before he was able to give his blessing. Steve waited quite a few years and talk to Bill's son the get the blessing to release it.
Conflict 3- Person vs. Person- Players would rarely test Bill but when they did they regretted it. He was always very sure of his ideas and himself. He had to find the self control that a lot of coaches don't have when it comes to listening to their players. Bill would listen but only to extent and any point if it came about more then winning and the team. Then Bill was going to have any of it.

The theme of this book is to always be coachable. You can always learn from somebody else. Everyone has different experiences and if they are willing to teach you then listen up. Bill had taken a team that was struggling got the whole organization on board and made them coachable and great successful.
