The book All American Boys by Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds is a non-fiction novel that depicts the life of two teenagers. One teenager named Rashad is a black male who is on his high school basketball team and in the ROTC at his school. The other teenager is named Quinn and he attends the same school as Rashad, also Quinn's father died while serving his country in the war. In the novel the character Rashad is wrongly accused of stealing a bag of chips and he is brutally beaten and assaulted by a police officer who Quinn looks up.

On a scale of 1 to 10 i would give this book a 8. The reason i gave the book an 8 is due to the book being hard to follow because of the constant switching in points of views. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading the novel. I would recommend it because it helps show the racial injustice in society and the racial stereotypes that are place on the black race.

According to http://www.simonandschuster.com/books/All-American-Boys/Jason-Reynolds/9781481463331 the review of this book is very accurate. The reviewers Simon and Schuster said that Rashad was belligerence and resisted arrest. The reviewers also said that Quinn refused to believe that his father figure Paul was capable of committing this act against another human being. The school was divided and also was the community because someone with a video recorder recorded what was happening and sent it to the local news outlets.

I do not agree with this review i believe the review could have been more in depth. The reviewers did not explain how the situation happened or how the community reacted. The reviewer just gave the readers the basics it wasn't really a great review in my eyes. The reviewers also never went into depth about the character in the book.

The universal theme in All American Boys by Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds is racial injustice. Racial injustice is the theme of this book because it happens all throughout the book it is what started the book with the stealing chips situation. Racial injustice has caused the character in the book Rashad to be hospitalized. Racial injustice has affected Quinn by slightly changing the way he views his father figure.

Racial injustice is relevant in the world today because young black men are misjudged and characterized as gangsters or drug dealers. In America African American men are 6 times more likely to be incarcerated than white males. the authors Kiely and Reynolds wrote, "Do you know the stats? it's something like black people are twice as likely to have no weapons on them when they are killed by cops" ( Kiely and Reynolds 53)

Rashad is the protagonist in the book All American Boys. Rashad is an open minded person and speaks his mind. He is considered popular among his peers and is very well respected. The authors write " Man ain't nobody stealing nothing" (Kiely and Reynolds 21). This shows that Rashad is not afraid to speak his mind even when in front of authority.

Rashad's main motivation in this book is his brother Randolph nick named "Spoony". Rashad is influenced by his brother because of his brothers out going attitude and the way his brother stands up to their dad. Rashad's brother also chose his own life path instead of having his father choose for him. His brother did not go into the army like his father wanted him too.

I cannot personally relate to the physical altercation that happened to Rashad due to me never having a run in with the police. I can although relate to the fact of being racially profiled such as when i sit down beside people or stand beside women they clinch their purses as if i plan on stealing from them. The racial injustice in the "land of the free" needs to come to an end.
