Educators that emphasize students' contribution to the learning process are likely to believe “the self can be a valid source of knowing” and believe participating in shared dialogue, discussions and interactions is the best way to learn and create meaningful understanding. This view resonated with me more than the others because I believe active engagement helps to acquire knowledge/new information.

I learned the diagram provided in the reading captures educators' beliefs into organized categories. The most global beliefs are at the top then going down is the most local beliefs of who they are. It is interesting how this system of beliefs can be impacted if educators' beliefs change.

Scholars explain that students take responsibility for their own learning when they “feel autonomous, competent, and connected to their classmates and educators.” This creates self determined and responsible learners. This is important for educators to not feel the need to be in control all the time. I believe in seeking out my students' interests in what activities they like doing and giving them options because I want my students to have autonomy and be actively engaged during their learning process. Creating meaningful relationships helps students feel cared for, supported and they are more likely to engage. I also find that having positive relationships with students creates fewer behavioral problems and students are more academically motivated therefore improving academic performance.

Educators have an impact around them and I believe it is important to be a role model for students. It is also helpful for educators to self-reflect and understand the influence of their values, beliefs and reality.

If educators fail to reflect on their own beliefs it can have a negative impact on how they are as professionals. The failure to examine one’s beliefs has the potential to have negative effects on a classroom environment. For example, depending on an educator’s belief he or she decides what is valued in the classroom, from student interactions to the content being taught.

"apprenticeship of observation" is a term coined by Lortie that refers to how future educators can mimic the teaching strategies used by the teachers they have had in their own educational journey. Future educators have had the opportunity to observe members of the profession they are entering into for years. Because of this their influence can be seen in future educators' work.

“epistemological beliefs” are beliefs that educators have in terms of the role of schooling. For instance a teacher’s belief in knowledge. Some teachers believe that they themselves are the only source of knowledge which is more of a behaviorist approach while other educators believe that the self can be a valuable addition to knowledge. This teacher will value and student’s contribution and background knowledge to the learning experience.

Most of the literature on educator beliefs is centered around white, middle-class, female teachers.
