I'm certified in TESOL, but my out-of-state certification wasn't reciprocal. So I'm working towards my K-6 Elementary Ed. cert! I'm excited to work in a gen ed classroom. They're picking up content more quickly than my former ELLs, but the behavior is more challenging. I look forward to taking this course!

First Days of School

Everything in this lesson reinforces the importance of being prepared while also being flexible. I like how Wong suggests we leave the classroom relatively bare in the beginning, so that we could establish routines and procedures before creating a permanent seating arrangement and introducing learning centers and libraries. This is practical and also relieves stress on the new teacher. I was freaking out the first week when I discovered I had no books in my room!

Throughout the video clip “Discipline and Procedures: The Effective Teacher" Wong says, “I'm not telling you what to do. I'm telling you what effective teachers do." I read “The First Days of School" with this in mind. However, I noticed that the language in Chapter 12 seemed more imperative than optional. On the first day, he outlined steps that teachers should follow in order to make students feel welcome and confident that they are in the right place. My first day was chaotic! Only about 5 students came on time. Then I showed them where to put their backpacks and where to sit. For the next 30 minutes, parents continued to arrive. They had multiple questions, and I tried to answer their questions, while monitoring the volume level of the class, and shooing away students who had numerous requests and complaints. It sounds so easy when you only read what the teacher will be doing, and not what everyone else is doing.

Similar to the first few weeks of school, after break, I will review the behavioral expectations and classroom routines. I’ll take time to model routines as needed, and I will positively recognize students who are following routines properly. I will also review classroom job expectations. Maybe we will take time to take a tour of the classroom – point out things that are familiar and things that are new.
