White Clowns

Throughout the story, there has been many references to violence as an entertainment. This is shown by both actions and dialogue in the story. An example that was referenced to many times was the White Clowns. These “clowns” are referenced mostly by Mildred, who was normally watching television or with a group of friends. The White Clowns show could symbolize how the world is pure, but will get out of control, as white symbolizes purity and clowns normally mean ruthlessness. The purity of the white is the show, displayed by how the people of the society talking about it, with Mildred discussing the show and saying “‘Can you dance faster than the White Clown...People are having fun,’”(Bradbury 83). With relevance to how “happy” people are from this show, it can be assumed that this show is an entertainment that they are influenced from. It isn’t until later, when Montag gets home and is with Mildred and her friends, when the readers really find out what the White Clowns cartoon actually is. The readers find out that the White Clowns is a cartoon displaying “Three White Cartoon Clowns chopped off each other's limbs to the accompaniment of immense incoming tides of laughter”(Badbury 90). This form of satire, with the society making fun of the violence, symbolizes how the society is the “clown” and is without care for the world. With the cartoon being the “white” and the society being the “clown,” this shows how Bradbury was was showing how the society, the one in the book and possibly ones in his future, were going to be influenced by things we think are innocent, but actually cause us to like violence. This also shows that society has evolved into this. Society today has watched many cartoon shows that have violence in them. Even in children's shows, there are scenes of violence that cause the children to laugh.

Throughout the story, there are many references to violence as an entertainment. This is shown by both actions and dialogue in the story. Something that has been referenced to many times is dogs. And though they are seen as an innocent animal, the story’s tone makes them seem like a punching bag; something that can be harmed for one’s thrill. In the story Fahrenheit 451, Mildred often makes comments on harming dogs. For example, when Montag was upset one day, Mildred had said to him “Sometimes I drive all night and come back and you don’t know it. It’s fun out in the country. You hit rabbits, sometimes you hit dogs. Go take the beetle,”(Radbury 61). Suggesting to go take a vehicle to harm animals, as a way to calm one’s anger, adds an indirect characterization of Mildred. This shows that she takes fun out of violence. Mildred is also a representation of the society, which could mean that the rest of the society is also in the need for some good violence. Another time, when Montag was leaving, Mildred had been complaining about a dog that whining on their porch. When montag was almost out the door, Mildred called out at him “If you see that dog outside...give him a kick for me,”(Radbury----). This is another representation on how Mildred and the society are in favor of violence. This is also a showing on how the society is beginning to become an antagonist for Montag; encouraging him to perform brutality.

Video Games are a form of entertainment that’s very popular among the youth, but this time passing entertainment has been resulting in violence. Many researchers have linked acts of violence from adolescents who play video games more than five hours a day (Thompson). Recent studies have also shown that video game players are more entertained by M-rated games, stating that “injuring characters or destroying objects is rewarded or is required to advance in the game” (Thompson). This shows that the public tends to have a preference towards games with more violence. Another aspect to the brutal games is the anger that stems from playing them. A study had shown that the more hours that people spend on the video game are more prone to treat others, especially people in their family, with more aggression. There have been many cases in which at national events (events in which people go to play video games), people have broken objects around them when they don’t “win” at the game.(Lourgos). There have been arrests at these gaming events due to one of the gamers smashing equipment or harming another due to rage for the games that they played. Video games are so common among the youth though, that people find no reason to fight against the violence. And even though the games are rated “M,” parents are more than willing to buy them. The parents are completely oblivious to how the violence affects them”(Thompson). This shows how society is so entertained by a violent game, that nobody tries to change it.

Films and music videos are a form of entertainment that has many genres. In almost 98% of movies, there are at least one violent or sexual scene(TV Violence).Movies are often rated depending on how well that violent scene is. For instance, “...shows like Game of Thrones have millions of viewers, and there is at least one violent scene in each episode…”(Have Movies). Many movie critics go far as to degrade the movie if there isn’t enough gore. But movies aren’t the only violent entertainment that people can spend hours watching. Many music videos today, especially for rock music, contain either acts of violence, or have an appearance of guns. These videos tend to have “more viewers than 65% of the other videos found on social media”(DuRant). Many websites, including YouTube, don’t block out videos that contain violence, they just tell the audience that the video may contain disturbances. But society is also getting negative outcomes from these films and videos. There have been more acts of violence and accidental fatalities due to these videos; “People watch these videos, think that they are entertaining, and then try to do it themselves”(The Influence). There have been many cases in which people have been sent to hospitals after trying to imitate a video, and get themselves hurt (The Influence). This shows that not only is our society so impacted and persuaded by films and videos, but it also shows that the violence ones have an impact as well.
