Films and media contribute to social movements/educational issues by helping shape narratives or show empathy. However, the media can also distort perspectives by spreading misinformation. This is something that happens quite often through social media where a majority of people will get their "news" from.

Films and media contribute to my understanding of a social movement or educational issue by telling different sides of a story or different versions. I think the news, especially, influences this kind of knowledge because I feel like many times that I watch the news, it is like whisper down the lane, and something gets confused or exaggerated. I think, in regard to film, it distorts reality. Even films that are based on a true story are not entirely true, and there is always something thrown in for extra drama or dialogue. I think, although news outlets are the main source of understanding social movements or educational issues, you can not always trust what is being said, and until the full story comes out or you know for yourself, it may just be another exaggerated news story.

I feel that the media gives social movements and education an active view of what is happening in our classrooms. Although most media is a small picture of a situation/movement, it highlights trends, patterns, and the adaptation of the movement to gain a better understanding of something one might already know. Of course, we have media that is longer and more encompassing, but social media, films, and TV capture small parts of big movements that help us, as consumers, generate a reaction/feeling and 'update' our feelings of a movement.

I took a class where we would watch a movie and discuss the social, political, and economic state of the country it was made in/the world. This gave good insight to why things were produced with certain social norms, themes, and characters. It can alter everything down to the shot of the movie, (the gaze it was meant for, and what they want you to believe). A lot of people don't have the media literacy to digest the underlying meaning of films/shows as well as other forms of media.

I do think that people should be able to formulate their own opinion without the influence of the media as it is very obvious that there are a lot of outlets have an agenda of swaying opinions. One moment from the film Ruby Bridges that really left me in shock was the scene in which it was revealed that Ruby had not been eating/hiding her lunches at school due to the harassments and threats that she was receiving from the protestors. The scene when the psychiatrist tells Ruby's mother that one protestor specifically had been threaten to poison her its devastating to see the realization in her eyes as to why she had not been eating.

It leads to him speaking about his time as a soldier and how he was treated like a nobody. He then says how it was fine to white people that he put his life on the line by serving in the army, but when his daughter us simply going to their school, he now doesn’t belong here. Abon was used for the country’s benefit. Then still treated as if he is a nobody and doesn’t belong. It was so upsetting to see how he was treated even after serving. It’s a harsh truth. He was used then disregarded.

People of color being taught in run down buildings, overly used and not updated textbooks, and overall a lack of resources compared to the white schools. Educators have such a big impact on those around especially kids. Having a teacher to support you (like how Ruby’s teacher did) is important, and so is staying true to what you fight for, especially when it’s for the equal treatment of people.

I do not think that my heritage or historical events related to my ancestors are represented in K-12 learning. I come from an Italian and Irish background, and neither of these was ever really represented in my education. I think it made me feel a little underappreciated. I would hear stories from my grandparents or great-grandparents and wonder why none of their stories of what they went through and why they came to America were ever talked about in school.

It doesn't make me feel a particular way seeing my own ancestry; however, not seeing as much of other heritages and cultures raises concerns. As someone from Algeria and Muslim, I don't think my heritage or the history of my ancestors is well represented in textbooks or K-12 education. I believe only North Africa or Islam are briefly mentioned, often in a very limited way. I would like to see more about Algeria and Muslim history spread around the world, not just in the U.S. education system. It would make me feel proud to know that more people are learning about the culture, struggles, and contributions of my ancestors.

I am german, italian, and polish descent and much of what I learned through history classes covered a lot of my heritage that I learned about. Not everything we covered was always "beneficial" history in regards to my heritage but I also learned a lot of good things about by ancestors history as well and how we came about all the way up until today. Being both Native American and African American, I can confidently say I learned most of my history outside of school (family+friends), the internet, or when I got to college. The textbooks used in my education before the collegiate level told a very white-washed version of history. It didn't discuss the eradication of natives or the gruesome details of slavery, like slave owners raping slaves, or how things like credit, paying for college, etc, were put into place after we were freed to systemically keep us separate. The U.S was made/built on the suffering of black and brown individuals but they're never credited for their contributions. Learning these things around middle-late teens/yound adulthood has made me feel robbed. I have to work 10 times harder to learn the real story all while others have no clue the truth behind slavery and the cultural accuracy of natives and their experience (not savages) or urge to care/learn.

I think that the poem represents the struggle between wanting to embrace Mexican heritage but also wanting to fit in with American society. He is proud of where he comes from and he wants to be able to fully welcome that and show it. On the other hand there is this pressure in America for everyone to act and be the same way. It discusses the feeling of being pulled one way and then another, knowing you come from such an important legacy and wanting to celebrate it, but being a part of a new society that doesn't celebrate or include that in education, and having to fit into a new culture. As a teacher, I would move beyond the standard curriculumn like Mr. Castro, and educate both hispanic and non hispanic kids on the parts of their culture that are stripped from history. I have come to deepen my understanding that education goes beyond the classroom and it is not just based off paying thousands of dollars for a degree. Anyone can be educated regardless of money. I have also learned that people who are uneducated can be dangerous. Not even much so who is right vs wrong makes a person dangerous but the fact of both sides understanding each other. We learned about a lot of violence through the segregation and chicano movement eras and I think both sides were unwilling to understand each other and what they believed which was what lead to so much violence (even though the racists were wrong).

In middle school I was a full time gymnast and I practiced about 30 hours a week. I had a teacher tell me that my BMI had to be incorrect because it was so low and that the number of pushups I did wasn't "possible". However, I was just extremely thin from amount of practice and strong from said practice. Since, I was younger it made me feel awkward that this was something that someone had actually thought about me and that they were perceiving me however they wanted to.

Yes, I have been judged based on how I look, where I am from, how I speak, and my background. Many times, right off the bat, I am judged because of my stretched ears, bright orange hair, and tattoos all over my arms. They are not small tattoos and are easily visible. I recently got a new job. It is owned by the same people that I previously worked for; I just switched locations. I was warm, so I took off my sweater, and my manager turned around and said, "No offense, but I have to double-check if that is ok." I had no idea what he was talking about, but I confirmed that he had to make sure that my arms could be out because of my tattoos. I am the highest paid at my job and have one of the highest titles of what I can do, but, because someone saw my tattoos, all of my credentials and experience went out the window. It is also often that I am profiled because I am an Italian who lives in South Philly. There is a new Netflix show about the South Philly mob, so as soon as anyone finds out where I am from or my background, it is an automatic assumption that me and everyone I know are gang members.

I work at a gym and I feel like sometimes I can get looked at the wrong way or they can assume I am the the bottom of the barrel "cant afford a membership and i am dirty" janitor of the club. I work at Lifetime Fitness and its considered a "luxury" gym, many of the people there are very nice and very respectful as I made many friendships there over the years. However, there are some members s who think they are the "the queen and king" when they come there and almost like look down at me when i'm working or even the way they leave the locker room a mess when they leave. It shows me that they think they are entitled to what they do because they pay for a membership at and the "janitor" should clean up after them.

I think that school shootings heavily impacted my middle and high school experience. I remember there being many days that we had to complete shelter in place drills and other days where we would have to stay in one classroom for half the day because there was a threat called to my high school. I think the number of school shootings that have occurred in recent years and the lack of action taken regarding it have made students fearful to go to school and has redefined the safe space that school is supposed to be.

I think that, as horrible school shootings are something that is almost normalized in today's society. I remember doing active shooter drills in elementary, middle, and high school. I do remember sometimes feeling scared to go to school just because there was always a chance something could happen. I haven’t personally experienced any real shooting hazards since moving to the United States that directly impacted my life. However, during college, there were a couple of incidents that made me feel unsafe. One time, a prisoner escaped from Chester’s jail and was reportedly seen near my campus in the woods. School shootings are something I am very passionate about. Ever since Sandy Hook, I have always had that worry in the back of my mind “what if my school gets shot up?”. Whenever I am in school or a classroom, I look for places I could hide if it were to happen. Which should not be something kids think about. When I was in 5th grade, I was placed in a 3rd grade classroom for the day because my teacher had to leave early. That was when we had a lock down. I think that one of the trauma-informed practices that schools should practice would be supporting students from the bus stop to and forward. I think that this goes along with building a relationship. When I was in grade school, it was important for me to have someone (an adult) at school whom I was able to trust. I feel as though everyone, in a sense, has that feeling that if there is at least one person in a space that they can trust, they feel better about being there. I also needed this in high school sometimes. It was nice to know that if I emailed a teacher about something important or something going on, I would hear back from them in a reasonable time. I think that the showing compassion and not judgement point really stood out to me. Essentially it is to not judge a student based on they way they respond to you. In Pariah, Lee was able to utilize her education (creative writing) as an outlet, and in school, she had a teacher she was able to share her poetry. Having supportive teachers and administration is the biggest part of being accepting of all different types of identities. Another aspect is having an open mind, which we saw in Laura in the film. She was accepting of Alike in all forms, despite Lee blowing her off. Lee's mom is the opposite of being accepting and having an open mind, where she fuels her identity with hate, and uses religion as her means. We see her often alone in the film, and she is rarely ever accepting of people's ideals, unless they align with hers.
