Students will read text one. They will begin thinking about the patters of stars in the sky and how those patters can connect to make constellations. Every student will read this then on a Kahoot students will answers some questions based on the text and some questions about graphs because later they will make their own constellations and graph them. These questions will determine student readiness and will tell the teacher what groups they should be placed in for the lesson. 

Kahoot questions:

1.       What is a Path?

A sequence of vertices such that from each vertex there is an edge to the next vertex in the sequence, as if one were visiting vertices by walking along the edges. In a directed path, the direction of the edge’s matters; one would be allowed to walk only in the direction of the arcs.

2.       What is a Graph?

A graph is a diagram of points and lines connected to the points. It has at least one line joining a set of two vertices with no vertex connecting itself.

3.       Which one of these is … Two or more lines that meet at a point are intersecting?

5.       Are constellations patters?

Yes. 

Students will be given graph paper and be told to make a constellation.

The constellation measurement doc will be up for an example. The students have free choice in what their constellations will look like. Teacher will go around and observe the student’s progress. Once completed during a set time the teacher will inform the students to then find these key graphing terms on their graphs. 

Abscissa - The horizontal line, or x-axis, of a graph. 

Arc - A portion of the circumference of a circle. 

Axis - One of the lines that is used to form a graph. 

Collinear - A set of three or more points that are lying on the same straight line are collinear. 

Coordinates - A set of two numbers that indicate where a point is on a graph. The first number indicates the x-axis and the second number the y-axis. 

Coplanar lines - Two or more lines that are on the same plane or flat surface. 

Diameter - A line segment that passes through the center of a circle with each end point being on the circumference. 

Endpoint - The point at the end of a line segment or ray. 

Horizontal - A flat or level line or plane that is perpendicular to the vertical. 

Intersecting lines - Two or more lines that meet at a point are intersecting. 

Line - A straight object that is infinitely long and thin. It is only in one dimension. 

Line segment - A portion of a line with two endpoints. 

Midpoint - The point of a line segment that is the same distance from both endpoints. Noncollinear points - A set of three points that are not located on the same line. 

Number pair - Two numbers that represent a point on a graph, also called the coordinates. Ordinate - The vertical line, or y-axis, of a graph. 

Origin - The origin is the point where the X and Y axis intersect on a graph. This is the point (0,0) in a two-dimensional graph. 

Parallel lines - Lines that never intersect or cross are parallel lines. Parallel lines Perpendicular lines - Two lines that form a right angle (90 degrees) are perpendicular lines.

Students will then go up and share their constellations to the whole class. This will be brief, and they will pick one key graphing term they found on their graphed constellation and describe it. They will then stick their constellation to the front board. This will show a collection of everyone’s stars. In order to show mastery students will need to Observe and discuss that there are more stars in the sky than anyone can easily count, and that they are not scattered evenly in the sky. This will be discussed after everyone has shared and we can look up at the board and see that there are patters and clusters to stars. They will also show mastery by indicating one key term from their graph that was presented to them to find. 

Develop mathematical skills and/or computational fluency for everyday living, such as money skills, estimation skills, time and measurement skills, and comprehension of graphs, tables, schedules, and charts.

The second standard is a great extension for exceptional students. The kahoot can be made and adapted based on the highest level in the class this will determine what other components need to be present within the lesson. I will also use both the video and reading based on the students level.
