Roman J. Israel, Esq. is a dramatic thriller set in the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system. Denzel Washington stars as a driven, idealistic defense attorney whose life is suddenly disrupted. In the beginning of the movie, there is a dialogue between Roman and Maya where Roman reveals earlier on in his career he got to a point where he had to choose his family or his career. Which is a question alot of young lawyers, especially young criminal defense lawyers face. This situation shows that according to the film, Roman J. Israel, Esq. the best way to approach injustice is to help people that are suffering by suffering and sacrificing parts of your own life. This was an effective method for Roman as he was a highly praised lawyer, and the moment he betrayed his beliefs and tried to make some money, he bit the bullet.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, by Bryan Stevenson. This guide offers resources for those who want to explore issues central to the book. In the story Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson is a criminal defense lawyer who favors defending people that are on death row. Throughout the story, he faces many obstacles like racism, criticism, and discrimination. The way he faces injustice is a method of compassion and perseverance. Every set-back he faces he learns from, and figures out a new way to face the set-back.

To Kill a Mockingbird - Responding to Justice

To Kill a Mockingbird is a 1961 novel by Harper Lee. Set in small-town Alabama, the novel is a bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, and chronicles the childhood of Scout and Jem Finch as their father Atticus defends a Black man falsely accused of rape. To Kill a Mockingbird is a very similar story to as one of the main character is accused of rape, and another character which is a lawyer has to defend the other character. In the book Atticus Finch responds to justice in a similar way as Bryan does in Just Mercy. He responds to injustice with a method of compassion and perseverance.

In this article, Katie D'Angelo analyzes violent actions in response to injustice. She even says violence in response to injustice is just "as American as apple pie." She talks heavenly about the civil rights movement in the 1960s and about how many people responded to injustice with violence. She even argues, "Instead of being outraged by the protest, perhaps we should be outraged by what they are protesting against." I think this article is the opposite of my personal views, and the views portrayed by the three other texts.

My personal views on this topic is to approach injustice with perseverance compassion, and to never give up when fighting for justice. You should do this no matter what obstacles you face, because if you truly believe in getting justice for something you will do everything in your power. The three texts, Roman J. Israel Esq, Just Mercy, and To Kill a Mockingbird display my views on this topic perfectly. The one text about using violence as a response to injustice, just doesn't sit right with me. I believe this because I don't believe two wrongs, make one right. With reading these 4 texts, I've learned more about how I respond to injustice myself.
