What is indifference? Simply put, it's a lack of interest. People who feign not caring or are apathetic towards the state of affairs around them are considered to have an indifferent attitude. Indifference implies a lack of empathy or consideration for the problems or needs of others.

Indifference shows us that there are people who are selfish and unwilling to do whatever it takes to make peace in this world.

“Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings.” -Helen Keller

Voting - personal

"The answer cannot be that we believe that by doing so, we will influence the outcome of an election. My vote, were it not withheld, would have no such effect. Voting is, strictly speaking, pointless." - Matthew Walther

"It is only indifferent individuals, lacking any affect for parties and candidates, who exhibit the low turnout expected of those with no clear preference." - Sung-jin Yoo

Choosing not to vote in elections or participate in civic activities, displaying indifference towards the democratic process and societal governance is a more common phenomenon than you think. In 2021, only 62% of Canadians voted in the federal election - a 5% decrease from 2019 and an 11 % decrease from 1867. Far too many people say “it's just 1 vote, it doesn’t matter,” but when so many people do that, it heavily affects the outcome. Every time someone makes the choice not to vote, it matters. It is the primary way we as citizens, have to show our support, or disfavour, towards politicians and policies.

Furthermore, not voting is something that happens in dictatorships not democracies, in order to uphold a free and fair system, everyone needs to do their part. Casting a vote is the bare minimmum, yet many people are very indifferent to the action.

The best soluction for voter indifference is voter education, as it can help more people understand why voting is important, why their vote does matter and showing voters that they have a voice too.

Holocaust Denial - Global

"The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference." - Ian Kershaw

Holocaust denial has been an ongoing problen for decades since it's horrors occured. During those times, the immoral deeds of the Nazis fell on deaf ears. The indifference of people who belived themselves not involved was often attributed to the circumstances after the war, putting food on the table was important after the econimic hardships of the great depression especially for the germans. Many Nazi leaders did not want to own up or admit to any of the atrocities they commited at the concentratio camps, and many citizens (of varying countries) choose to feign ignorance all together.

Today, we are taught about the Holocaust and it's significance. Of course, there are still radicals who actively deny the Holocaust ever happend - many of whom are part of hate groups. The unfortunate reality is that their missinformation can spread and cause people to alter their views and ideas of the events that transpired in 1941 - 1945. The best we can do is to keep educating and trying to bring down the Nazi radicals and hate groups. Anti-semitism has been an issue for decades, and many people have been extreamly indiffirent to it, because it "doesn't affect them."

Violence against Indigenous women - Local

"Amnesty International characterized Canadian society as “indifferent” to the high rates of violence faced by Indigenous women and girls. When the Canadian government took another twelve years to launch a national inquiry, that indictment seemed true." - Kara Granzow

The indifference towards the murder of indigenous women in Canada reflects failure to address Canada's more systemic issues and provide justice for marginalized communities who have faced centuries of suffering under or government. Despite alarming statistics and pleas from families and communities, there is a lack of urgency in investigating these cases, seeking accountability, and implementing meaningful reforms. Between 2009 and 2021, 490 Indigenous women and girls were the victims of homicide, yet it took Canada so long to do anything at all, in the end they "made a set of commitments for federal departments and agencies to support systemic change," which really hasn't done much at all. This indifference by the government highlights a more broad issue of discrimination, historical injustices, and institutional neglect that continue to strongly affect indigenous peoples.

Currently The First Nations Action Plan implemented by the government outlines areas that need to be addressed:

Supporting survivors and families

Prevention services

Healing for ourselves and our First Nations

As individuals, we can strive to educate as many people as possible and protest for the government to impliment more measures to keep Indigenous women safe. If possible, donations can be made to the families of those who have unfortunatly lost their loved ones to Indigenous homicides.

"Child labour may be so deeply ingrained in local customs and habits ... It is frequently surrounded by a wall of silence, indifference and apathy." - International Labor Organization

"The average American consumer doesn’t understand that child labor is a pervasive problem affecting an estimated 152 million children in the world" - Reid Maki

We as the general public are very prone to falling into excesive consumerism. What many fail to realize is where these products they are recieveing are coming from and more importantly, who is making them? Children are. Unfortunatly, almost 1 in 10 children worldwide are victims of child labor. Children work on tabacco farms, mines, factories and many other places where children should not be spending their childhood. In places like Africa, Asia, and Latin America for example child laborers face harsh and often unsafe conditions in tobacco fields.

Yet, we as consumers don't bat much of an eye to the issue. We are indifferent. Many are aware of the forced labor that happens in order to bring them products such as bricks, garments, textiles, footwear, carpets, and fireworks. However, no one speaks out. Child laborers are exploited because they're vulnerable. They make meager pay, less than adults, work just as long, and have no rights in regards to time off, medical, meals, etc. and hardly anyone cares, as long as your package arrives, right?

To help combat child labor there are a couple things the individual can do, and if we do it as a collective we can hope to at the very least make a small change:

Buy sweatshop-free products

Educate yourself and others

Invest in social protection

These are just some of the things we can do on a personal level. To see change on a wider scale will take time and the effort of the people.

People's indifference to climate change often stems from 3 things: misinformation, assumed distance from the problem (ie. "It doesn't affect me" and so on), and the overwhelming nature of the issue. It is important to help people learn to care about climate change. Indifference can be cause by a multitude of things like not being educated, choosing to ignore the situation as a coping mechanism or just not caring at all.

To combat indifference towards climate change first, education is crucial. Providing clear, accessible information about the science and impacts of climate change can dispel any misinformation and highlight its relevance to someones daily life. Second, connecting climate change to personal experiences will make it more relatable. It is important for people to understand that it does affect them. Third, promoting actions individuals can take in order to contribute positively (like renewable energy, recycling, waste reduction etc.) Climate change is a very serious thing, and radical people who believe it to be a 'government theory' have stacks of scientifical evidence to prove them wrong.

People often don't pay much attention to social justice issues because they might feel distant or unrelated to their own lives. If someone is at the top of the ladder, they likely wont care for those at the bottom. The priviliged will keep their privilage, and those who face injustice due to their lack of privilage are left to be ignored or even forgotten. Women, POC, Indigenous are just some examples of marginalized groups who face social injustice every day. This indifference can also come from feeling powerless to make a difference or from cultural norms that downplay these problems. Many people have grown to live with this injustice - racism, unequal pay, unfair opportunities and so on.

Understanding the various forms of social injustice issues is important in order to address them effectively. We can change by talking about these issues, showing empathy, and getting involved. Once we understand how these problems affect people and take action, we can make our society more just and inclusive.
