When he could not find any treatment to fix his nervous system, he is okay with wasting away until he dies. When major events occur, he shows little emotion. For example, when he thinks about his maiming in Memphis he only feels "a kind of bafflement" and when he thinks of Linda dying, he feels a "slack sickness and loathing" (PAGE NUM?). He only seems to show fear when his immediate life is at stake, showing how the lack of being able to jack into the Matrix has made him apathetic towards his life in the real world. However, it seems that being outside of the matrix, he has very little care for himself/his body. Since his whole life was in the matrix (his career being a hacker), Case feels that being unable to jack in has made his life meaningless and is thus uncaring towards anything in the real world. 
Because all his power is in the matrix, not being able to jack in has made him lose all of his power, making him helpless in the real world with a dying body. As a result, when Armitage takes out the neurotoxins in his body but still threatens to put them back in his system, he has power over Case. When given the choice between leaving the mission without risk of the neurotoxin or continuing the mission which would jeopardise his life, he chooses to continue for Molly (PAGE NUM?). In this moment, he puts his values of self-interest below his love/loyalty for Molly since he want to help her. Similarly with Linda he gives her his $50, despite the fact that he needs the money to pay back his debts (page 11). These are rare moments which Case acts selflessly in order to help the people he loves/has feelings towards.

His biggest motivation is being able to keep the ability to jack in and out of the matrix. He does this despite being kept in the dark and even continues after knowing the harm Wintermute will cause. With so many things unexplained to the reader, Case's suspicion of Armitage and his investigation to find out about him gives readers a lot of information about the world the novel is set in.
