Autograph's unique collection of photography charts the contributions of diverse cultures in Britain over two centuries. We'll use these images as the starting point for students to curate their own pop-up exhibition – and explore how histories are collected, shared and created through photography. Taking place at your school, the first workshop will be centred around transforming the classroom into a pop-up exhibition using portraits from Autograph’s Exhibition in a Box and Archive Learning Resource. Students will write and discuss their intuitive responses to the portraits, listening to and interpreting the images. Students will work together to find thematic, historical and conceptual links between the portraits and will take ownership in curating their own mini-exhibition. Their discussions will be the basis of justifying their creative decision-making in curating the portraits.

We offer a variety of programmes to schools and young people including:

• Introductory and progressive instrumental and singing lessons in schools and a developing programme to parents and families out of school

• Instrumental ensembles and choirs are offered in venues across the borough after school hours, as well as support for schools wishing to develop their in-school ensemble offer

• Music curriculum support, advice and INSET are offered to schools, as well as forums, conferences and development sessions for instrumental tutors and network partners

HMS and network partners offer holiday music courses at various times of the year ranging from world percussion and orchestral programmes to creative music-making and singing.

Performance opportunities provide Hackney children and young people with a platform to showcase their music throughout the year e.g. HBYO with the Docklands Sinfonia at St Anne’s, Limehouse; Brighton Arts Festival with BYO; HCJE at the Warehouse with GSMD, and at the Barbican with Jazz at Lincoln Centre musicians, Hackney Bateria at CBSO, Tate Modern and COLF.

The Daubeney Children & Family Hub offers family support and can provide you with access to family health services such as midwives, health visitors, speech therapists and dieticians.

We also run free drop in play and stay sessions, parenting programmes, family learning and health promotions. The nursery, situated in the children’s centre, offers day care places on a part time basis. During term time our focus is on children between 0 and 5 years old, in the summer this increases to children up to 8 years old.

The 25m Teaching Pool has 6 lanes and includes a movable pool floor to adjust the depth of the pool from 0m to 2m, an ideal environment to learn to swim or to bring the whole family to swim.

The Toddler Pool is suitable for children aged 8 years and under and includes various water features including; mushrooms and water jets. A variety of toys and water aids are also provided to encouraging learning and play.

What’s on?

• Provide specific support to any child or young person known to the Hackney Short Breaks team. We aim to work together to make sure that the leisure activity meets the child or young person’s individual physical, behavioural, sensory or communication needs. A New Direction’s new Primary Arts programme aims to increase access to high quality, inspiring arts, cultural and creative opportunities for children and staff in London’s state mainstream primary schools and primary SEND settings.

Delivered in partnership with 20 cultural organisations, our Primary Arts programme offers free opportunities for schools. It aims to unlock the creative potential, cultural capital and skills of teachers and children, offering opportunities to support wellbeing, confidence, personal interest and development.

Schools will be able to choose from the following strands and the programme. The entire programme is offered free of charge to schools.

• In-Schools Touring: a choice of 10 arts performances and in-class workshops for your pupils, plus staff CPD, resources, creative materials, and books.

• Go & See: free tickets for pupils to experience theatre, film and visual arts.

• Masterclasses: CPD days for teachers exploring a range of creative approaches to literacy and reader development.

• Come & Try: creative practical twilight sessions for all school staff.

• Cultural Education Leadership Programme: for all London primary teachers ECT+1 and above interested in leading a change in their school's approach to arts, culture and creativity across all subject areas.

Barbican Creative Learning works with a small selection of schools over a three-year period to develop and deliver a menu of activities, events and projects in each academic year – working towards mutually-agreed objectives. Each year, 50 Yard Young Artists engage in a year-long programme leading to a showcase on The Yard's stage. Sometimes they develop shows with professional artists that we celebrate in our public programme, like The Egg Show or Really Real Teenz!

Many of our Yard Young Artists stay with us for many years, but each Summer we open up some new spaces.

From exploring Tudor buildings or habitats to orienteering and eco-art, we have lots of unforgettable sessions to offer - each designed to help children explore and discover nature and to support learning in schools.

Allow your pupils to learn in a natural and exciting way through the Forest School ethos.

These sessions cover all areas of the curriculum and support children to engage and develop their understanding of sustainability, love and care.

We have found that blocks of six sessions or more, offer a wide range of opportunities for children to learn and practice new skills, and that we can evidence the impact on children’s learning and development over such a short period.

Staff from participating schools and settings will need to accompany, and be responsible for, the children, whilst the Forest School Lead conducts the sessions.

Participating settings will have access to the changing facilities and use of resources at Clapton Park Children's Centre, and will access Hackney Marshes for the sessions.

The site is risk assessed on a regular basis, and the Forest School Lead holds a current First Aid certificate.

Visit Broadstairs - a charming seaside resort on the Kent coast with connections to a giant of the literary world.

Broadstairs' spectacular coastline gives you seven sandy beaches and bucket loads of seaside charm. Here, families rediscover the joy of having fun together beside the shore. Central Viking Bay boasts children’s rides and beach huts; rural Botany Bay has photogenic chalk stacks; whilst Joss Bay offers a surf school and peaks that have long made wave-riders smile.

In Broadstairs you’ll find fishermen’s cottages, clifftop walks and independent shops lining original Victorian streets and alleyways. The town was Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday spot and his legacy includes Dickens House Museum. Nearby you’ll find the multi-award winning, costumed, St Peter’s Village Tours. Or for something with a more modern twist, try your luck at beating the challenges The Escapement escape room has to offer.

Like your food? You’ll love Broadstairs. Eateries include smart restaurants, quaint cafés and 1950s ice cream parlours. Visit in the autumn and at Easter to feast at the three-day Broadstairs Food Festival – a smorgasbord of fine Kentish produce, cider, beer and wine.

Other events will see you meeting costumed characters at June’s Broadstairs Dickens Festival; singing-along at sessions in August’s Broadstairs Folk Week or playing beach games and watching the fireworks at the Water Gala. On 5th October 1849, Charles Dickens was staying at the Albion Hotel (now Royal Albion Hotel), writing early chapters of David Copperfield. In a letter to his friend, the illustrator John Leech, about the delights of this Thanet resort, he wrote: "There has been a trifle of rain here – a spot or two. But today is one of the most wonderful and charming days I ever saw – the air so brisk and bracing as it is nowhere but at Broadstairs – the Channel so busy and alive with shipping as it is nowhere but off Broadstairs – the hotel so cosy and like a private house as it is nowhere but in Broadstairs – everything as nothing is out of Broadstairs. Veeve la Broadstairs!"

Margate has a beach with tidal pool, children’s rides and amusement arcades offer families traditional seaside fun and entertainment.

Even if the tide is in there is still plenty of golden sand to make sandcastles. Restaurants, bars and seafood stalls are just a short walk away in the Old, on the harbour arm and around the town.

Explore a real archaeological site with a trained archaeologist. Uncover more about the discovery of London’s Roman Amphitheatre, the topography of Roman London and what happened in one of its most important buildings. Lasting around 1.5 hours, these facilitated sessions are designed to provide an exciting insight into life in the capital nearly 2000 years ago.

Cost: £125 + VAT per class/1.5-2hr session, funding available.

Great Fire of London (KS1-2)

This will include creative and discussion-based activities looking at what life was like in London before, during and after the fire. You and your group will be introduced to Samuel Pepys and Sir Christopher Wren in the heart of the City, before heading into Guildhall Art Gallery to map out the spread of the fire, meet a Fire Judge and design a monument to commemorate the City that rose from the ashes.

There is an option to add a self-guided visit to The Monument to the Great Fire of London to this workshop.

The Big Picture – maths through movement and art (KS1-2)

Embark on a journey into the world of art and maths, bringing to life one of Britain's largest displayed oil-on-canvas paintings through creative dance and drama. The workshop, run by performing arts specialists Artis, will ignite curiosity as students physically and creatively explore the mathematics hidden within an awe-inspiring painting - Copley’s 'The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar' - supporting their understanding of number, measurement and geometry as well as art and history.

As part of the adventure you will use specially crafted resources, to take a self-led tour around the gallery, unlocking further maths immersed in the gallery’s rich tapestry of art.

In partnership with London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE, we are delighted to offer a live, interactive multi-sensory workshop that enables students to virtually explore three important Roman sites in London:

• London’s Roman Amphitheatre

• Billingsgate Roman House and Baths

• London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE

This 60-minute session challenges pupils to think critically and enhance their understanding of the past, unlocking the sights and smells of Roman London as they explore the accompanying replica artefact box.

The City of London School Visits Fund may be able to support your school visit to Guildhall Art Gallery and London’s Roman Amphitheatre. This fund provides grants of up to £300 towards the costs of facilitated sessions, admission, transport and/or teacher cover for eligible schools. Schools can book up to 60 students and 10 group leader tickets per half hour timeslot depending on availability. Online bookings for self-led visits and lunch room slots close one week in advance. To plan your route we suggest using www.tfl.gov.uk. Your school should have an account with them through which you can book your journey. Children travel for free on the tubes and buses, with accompanying adults also travelling free on the school’s ticket.

Facilities

We have a lunchroom for the children. There is space for them to sit and eat, and to leave coats and bags. Two Temple Place is just next to Temple Gardens where in decent weather children are able to get some fresh air. We also recommend you visit the Artist Garden https://www.thecolab.art/temple-2 – a space on top of Temple Tube station. A range of gifts and souvenirs can be bought from our shop.

Home to the Elizabeth Fry Refuge from 1860-1913, thousands of young women recently released from prison spent time in the house. In the twentieth century, 195 Mare Street became the New Lansdowne Working Men's Club.

195 Mare Street will soon be restored as a family home and community arts venue.

Beneath the curious old pathways of the Square Mile lies a rich Roman history surviving 2,000 years of building, fires and bombings.

Explore the Billingsgate Roman House and Baths by descending into the basement of an office block on Lower Thames Street, and discover one of Roman London’s most fascinating remains. First built around A.D. 150 then extended a hundred years later, it was occupied right through to the end of Roman London in the early 5th century A.D. Get close to the protected archaeological remains, which are preserved in immaculate condition, as if the archaeologists have just left the site.

Lost for centuries, the original circular walls of the Amphitheatre were rediscovered by archaeologists working on the site of the new Guildhall Art Gallery building in 1988. Visitors can now step into these well-preserved Roman ruins in which crowds would once have gathered to watch wild animal fights, public executions and gladiatorial combats.
