Immediate Theatre was set up by Jo Carter in 1996 with the aim of working closely with local organisations and community groups to create performances which engaged people in the process of change. The company has seen a lot of change over the past 25 years, but we have always remained true to this initial goal. We remain committed to our original vision of a society where questioning, articulate and motivated people create and collaborate to build thriving communities.

Our purpose is to involve communities in creative projects that inspire wellbeing, break down barriers and engage people in the process of personal and social change. We use theatre and the arts to help people engage with issues and concerns. The term “immediate” implying the “right here” on your doorstep and the “right now” of what is happening today. We believe that the arts have an intrinsic role to play in society and should not be restricted within institutions, but happening everywhere.

The town was Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday spot and his legacy includes Dickens House Museum. Nearby you’ll find the multi-award winning, costumed, St Peter’s Village Tours. If you like your music, Broadstairs Bandstand hosts regular concerts and gigs, while February's Broadstairs Blues Bash attracts fans of all kinds of blues music for this mostly free festival.

On 5th October 1849, Charles Dickens was staying at the Albion Hotel (now Royal Albion Hotel), writing early chapters of David Copperfield. We are the largest children’s theatre in the UK, welcoming 65,000 families and schools to our venue every year, and thousands more through our new Unicorn Online programme of free digital theatre experiences.

We offer subsidy to groups to enable them to attend where needed, and make our work with the values of curiosity, respect and courage, partnering with schools from our local boroughs and community groups from across London to ensure that young people have a voice in shaping our shows.

We believe that young people of all ages, perspectives and abilities have the right to experience exciting, entertaining and inspiring work - we want all children to experience our theatre and actively seek out children who wouldn’t otherwise attend. We maintain a strong commitment to representing diversity in our audiences, as well as on our stages, and we prioritise accessibility and inclusion across our organisation.

Acting as an agent of change is still central to delivering our mission: it informs the ways in which we work, to demonstrate what can be seen and thought about differently, highlighting who and what is absent or present in visual representation; whether within national museum collections, social media stories or contemporary exhibitions and publications. We work with artists using photography and film to explore these questions.

Online and in person, Autograph is an inclusive space where the myriad stories of marginalised people are valued and cared for, presented, published, discussed and shared. Photography remains one of the most accessible entry points for all kinds of learning and cultural exploration and a powerful tool to advance this process. Autograph’s consistent, patient and painstaking work – identifying and in some cases rescuing – key artists and archives continues to redress the ‘gaps and omissions' in photographic history, which we know exists.

No matter where you live an Autograph project is accessible via our online image galleries, blogs, audio-visual content and streamed events, alongside our publications, events, touring exhibitions, collection loans and free exhibitions at our gallery in London.
