The Magician's Hat

Date: 9/15
Genre: Fiction
Review: This book is about a magician that comes to the public library on family fun day. He does magic tricks for the children, but his greatest magic trick is letting kids pull books out of his hat. The children then, just like magic, imagine themselves within the story they chose. He teaches the children that with the magic of books and imagination they can be anything they want to be.
Age/Audience: I think this book would be good for ages four-eight. Any older, and I believe they would get the message about immersing yourself into a book, but the rest of the childlike qualities of the book would be lost to maturity.

She dances at dinner, on the bed, on the way to school, and everywhere in between. Her dancing begins to get in the way of her daily life and begins to annoy her parents. To combat this, her father signs Angelina up for ballet classes. Angelina loves it and goes on to be the worlds most famous ballerina.
Age/Audience: I think this book is good for young girls ages five to eleven. This book is cute, sweet, and appeals to young girls who like dancing. Of course, it can also appeal to young boys with a passion for dance. I read this book as child, then watched all of the DVD's that went with the series.

This time he has the help of his arch nemesis Petey and his son. Dogman and Petey work together to save the city, all while reconciling Petey's desire to be evil, but to also change for his son. My favorite parts where the instant replay footage, where you would flip the pages quickly to "watch the scene" like a video.
Age/Audience: This book would be good for boys ages seven to thirteen. Its humor and text level are perfectly applied to young and older boys alike. Girls, of course, can also enjoy this book, but it is more popular with the boys.

As the seasons change he hold tightly to his leaves, while his friends grow around him. Still little tree is too scared to let his leaves go. It is not until he can no longer see the sun that he becomes brave enough to shed his leaves and grow into a big strong tree. I like this book because the tree is scared at first but realizes that in order to be his best self he has to do things that scare him.
Age/Audience: Kids ages four to ten would like this book, because of the way they can relate to little tree. The Little Tree also touches on the changes of the seasons, which will help students in their science classes.

Date: 10/3
Genre: Realistic Non Fiction
Review: This book describes in narrative form the duties of a lightship in the harbors across America. The book describes the jobs of the ship to stay put in their spot no matter what so that the ship can warn other ships to stay on course in the fog. The ship has lights and a horn to warn ships of their path. It talks about the hard work the crew does in small spaces and in all weather. I like this book because while it is non fiction it tells the jobs of a lightship in a storytelling way.
Age/Audience: This book is good for kids who have an interest in ships, the ocean, and travel. The children wrote about the unfair treatment they received in the Japanese internment camps after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Ms. Breed would send the children books and try to educate the world on their behalf about what was being done to Japanese Americans. I like this book because it educated me about things that happened in the internment camps that I was never taught about in school.
Age/Audience: This book would be good for children of all ethnic backgrounds to see what fear and discrimination can do to people. Finally the kids enter a hurricane and notice it up close through the eye as they make observations about what is happening. He wants to run away back to New York, by stowing away on a ship. He is not afraid of anything, until the bombs begin to rain down on Pearl Harbor. He ends up finding his mother, a nurse, and bravely helping her tend to wounds. He even comes the realization that he was glad he did not stow away so that he could help people. I liked this book because it showed a narrative view of a historic event.
Age/Audience: This book would be good for students in second through fourth grade with the level of stamina it requires. She is immediately separated from her family because she has "trachoma". She documents her trials, fears, and experiences as she tries to make her way back to her family. I liked this book because it was an easy to read narrative that sounds similar to things that happen today at borders as far as separating families.
Age/Audience: This book is good for students in grades third through fifth. Honey turns out to be the answer, so after they go through warriors and elephants to get it they escape under a giraffe back to the tree house that is surrounded by lions. They make it back just in time for lunch but do not think their mom will believe them about their adventures.
Age/Audience: This book would be good for kids with a taste for adventure.

Date: 9/20
Genre: Fiction
Review: In this book Humpty Dumpty is looked at in a new light. Humpty has a new fear of heights after his fall, and cannot face the wall he fell off of. He loved to be up high near the birds. But to get his paper airplane back he must face his fears. When he does he emerges victorious, or hatches, as a bird. His transformation, was especially exciting for me, because it was a great metaphor for becoming new after facing trials.
Age/Audience: This books is good for both kids and adults. Young kids can be taught about overcoming their fears and obstacles. Older people can be reminded of perseverance. I think kids that struggle in school and in life would like this book as a helpful motivation.

I loved these books as a kid, because they were easy to read and colorful to look at.
Age/Audience: This book is good for younger audiences, as a way to segway into a larger book about deer or other animals.

Date: 11/25
Genre: Mythological Fiction
Review: In this book, Percy Jackson, a kid with ADHD and Dyslexia, finds out that he is the demigod (half god) son of the greek god of the sea Posedian. After coming to terms with his new reality, fighting monsters and training at camp half-blood, Percy is sent on a quest to find out who has stolen Zues´s lightning bolt. Since Percy was accused of the theft, and he is a child of the big three gods (big mistake on Posedians part) he must figure out the mystery or face the consquences. He does this with the help of his new friends and foes from camp-half blood and continues to grow and adventure in his new demigod reality as the series progresses. I loved this book and the series because of its easy to read, humourous, and exciting story.
Age/audience: This book would be good for students in fourth grade and up. For those students interested in greek mytholgoy Rick Riordan puts a modern and relatable spin on the classic tales. This book is good for boys and girls, especially those who feel they do not fit in or can relate the some of the exceptionalites Percy faces.

Date: 11/10
Genre: Fiction
Review: This book is about Princess Margaret of the Kingdom of Greeve. She is not the traditional princess, because she likes magic, frogs, competition, and basically anything that does not have to do with being a princess. After her parents lock her in a tower until her hand in marriage is won, Meg manages to escape with the help of her friend Cam. Together Cam and Meg set out to win the tournament for Megs hand herself. Along the way she must fight bandits, witches, gallant knights, and even a dragon. In the end Meg showed her family how backwards their traditions were and that she was worth more than twiriling dresses and swooning. I like this book because it challenges the trope of damsels in distress and teaches a good message of self discovery and liberation.
Age/audience
This book would be good for girls grades third and up. It would be especially good for those girls who do not fit the usual gender stereotypes of a girly-girl and those who like plays on fairy tales. Boys might also enjoy the amount of adventure and plot twists in this book, like the dragon actually being a cursed prince.
