The classroom's adaptability is improved. The classroom can be rapidly rearranged for a variety of activities and instructional situations. I was especially impressed by the amount of participation that they invited. Everyone from faculty to teachers to super-groovy-fairy-godmother design experts floated around and redesigned the space with the ease of a Extreme Home Makeover montage. The result is a classroom that will legitimately feel as though it belongs to a community rather than the domain or lair of a single teacher.

The room was repainted with a combination of neutral colors (grey) and bright colors (green). They created stations for students so they could work in different places for collaboration. The designer and the teacher looked at the classroom items and decided what he really needed in the classroom and discarded what is not needed (objects that he has not used in the last year). Lastly, I noticed that wheels were added to the bottom of the desks/tables that will allow for greater mobility during collaboration.

Then, the designers made the storage areas more accessible by removing the doors on them. The walls and furniture were all painted fresh, and the designers created more mobility in the teacher's area and in creating movable desks for the students (adding wheels to the desks).

The teacher first tossed a lot of his old items to remove clutter (analyzing if he used it in the last year and whether or not it was useful). The room was painted with brighter, welcoming colors, with the community contributing to the painting process, which probably made them feel more proud and accomplished in their contribution efforts.
The tables were much smaller, with wheels that make them easily movable. Earlier, students gave input that they liked teams but they wanted to feel part of a whole, which can be done with this new furniture.

The teacher emptied the classroom got rid of the things that he did not need. The classroom was painted and some of the closet doors were removed to give the students and teacher better access to storage space. Wheels were put on the tables and they were rearranged to create a space that was easier to move around in. The designers put up more white boards on the front, back and side of the room. This will hopefully lead to better efficiency. The teacher work station, was made more maneuverable. A white board component was added to that as well to allow for a smoother work flow. As a result the room is more inviting, and both the students and teacher will enjoy the benefits of the new configuration.

Only with everything removed can you see with fresh eyes the ways in which the space can be filled differently! The removal of clutter from the room will help with the ADDITION of clutter from the students, and the reclaimed cabinet space ensures that the "active" space of the classroom is free and accessible to all. The new paint job really helps the room to engage the eye, and hopefully, the brain!

Clearing the room and eliminating non essential items was the first step. The room appeared larger with many more areas for student to gather in groups to collaborate. There is much better flow. The whole energy of the room was changed.

The first step was to completely clear out the room and start with as blank of a canvas as could be achieved. Having the teacher go through and really decided what was needed/wanted in the room versus what was unnecessary was a big step in making sure the space was functional and not over-cluttered. I like that this implementation stage was completed without spending thousands of dollars on new furniture. Rather, the focus was on altering the space that existed and working with the materials on hand. It's amazing what can be done when things are cleared out, repainted with a purpose, and certain elements are added with a specific purpose in mind (such as the use of the walls to promote collaboration with stations and whiteboards).

I think it's very difficult as an educator to ever throw anything away - resources can be scarce, and we often make due with what we have. Throwing things away makes the space more usable and clean, but that's a big hurdle for many. The fresh coat of paint made the room feel bigger and more inviting as well. I also noticed the tables came back in on wheels which makes them easier to move around.

I think this is so important because many teachers keep the same things up on the walls or in the classroom even when it is no longer useful...decluttering regularly is so important. The room was given fresh paint and pops of color added to the storage areas. Wheels were added to the table for easy movement. They were able to find ways to utilize additional space by adding workstations in the corners.

I thought I saw a double high white board which maybe will be used as a pull down whiteboard? The walls got shelves and workspaces attached to them probably to free up space or to allow for a new type of workspace. The teacher had to purge, which I think is the theme of "less is more". The more space the better, so waste not the space you/he has with unnecessary clutter. I'm expecting a very clean, colorful, adaptable, and open space for the students.

While this makeover involved a team of experts, I love that the process could be used by any teacher who wants to redesign their space. Two important steps include 1) get feedback from others and 2) purge. Even though the teacher had a list of pain points for this classroom it was great to have someone from the outside observe the space and how it is being used to generate an additional list of problem areas. Additionally, involve students in the planning process. Have them provide suggestions for improvement, as well as what would make the space more learner friendly. My former district just renovated every elementary and high school building and put a variety of flexible furnishings in classrooms that were designed by each teacher. Many of our elementary teachers begin the year with the furniture in the corner of the room and allow the students to determine the placement of items in the learning space over the first week of school. Finally, purge! Teachers are hoarders, myself included. I remember walking into my first classroom where I was provided nothing but a set of textbooks. Here, the same rule applied to his classroom materials as it does cleaning out your house: if you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it. If only it were that easy! :)

I look around my classroom and can see, sitting out in the open, several things that should just be thrown away. Simply doing this could open up space in my room. It also allowed for this classroom to be fresh- only what will be used is back in the room. I also love that they've turned the walls of the classroom into student space, both for functionality and for display of work/teaming up on activities.

The pops of color really made the space look fun and inviting to students. Student demonstration stations were set up around the perimeter of the room where there were whiteboards where students could show their learning. This gives a whole new level of ownership of learning to students -- to be able to write and share on a big board. The teacher space was moved more to the center of the room which I think was key to helping the teacher be more in the middle of it all, instead of at the front and around the perimeter only.

Beyond the clean look provided by a fresh, bright coat of paint, the major transformations I saw occurring were the updated storage space (when combined with getting rid of unused materials should make a huge difference), and the way they made use of wall space for white boards and collaboration areas around the room. I love that idea. I am curious to see how the placement of furniture will be changed to increase engagement and productivity as well...

Ramon Palacios: The space becomes more functional. Spaces are created for students to work in throughout the classroom, which provides more space for students to work collaboratively and lessens the amount of space taken up by student desks. Ultimately, the classroom becomes and easier space to navigate. Closed areas are opened up, which gives the feeling of openness, which makes the room feel bigger. Splashes of color make the room more inviting.

Getting rid of materials/items that have not been used or are not helping to facilitate learning goals is a great place to start. During the implementation, the team also considered what wasn't working, what they needed to allow for more collaborative and innovative learning, and included the student voices for what they wanted/needed, which was so important. I loved how they considered having multiple learning spaces throughout the room, as well as brightening the space up and opening up a walk way so the teacher could walk around during facilitation time.

Students and community members come together to make changes and improvements to the space.

That, in turn, has an effect on storage space, counter space, etc. It was also clear that the group dynamic of so many people coming together helped keep the team motivated. The design required some careful planning and thinking, but the actual implementation was a way for the whole community to have buy-in!

During this phase the designer encouraged the teacher to take everything out of the room, and if if he had not used it in the last year- toss it. I love this to help with the decluttering. Generally speaking, we (teachers) tend to keep things year after year thinking we will use it over and over again. The reality is that with every new set of students, we are redesigning our learning materials, so there is no need to keep things from the past. In addition, so many of our resources are digital now. The paint on the walls and trim really brightened the space. I noticed the construction crew made much better use of wall space by building additional space for kids to organize their backpacks/personal items instead of having them at their feet. I really liked how so many stakeholder groups were included in this process- including the kids!

During the implementation stage the plan is applied to the space. I noticed that fresh paint makes the space look sharp and more inviting. The space was de-cluttered as much as possible. Things are re-positioned to get less clutter and more use of the space. This was a team effort.

I've always thought lighting was and will always be the most important thing for teachers and students. When we can see sunlight it feels great because it doesn't feel like your isolated in a classroom with artificial lighting. I also love the tables and how they are not in your traditional rows I feel kids love being in groups. Painting a room always feels like a fresh breath of air because it's new and it feels new. I love the whiteboards everywhere its great to have any place to write, teach and take notes.
