UNIT 1- Plants Role in Our World

Plants act as our air filters, or air, cleaning our air of the carbon dioxide we exhale and releasing fresh oxygen. This photo captures the essence of clean air. As I sit in my apartment surrounded by neighbors who are chain smokers, I can imagine myself here breathing deeply in the fresh air and feeling the sunshine on my face. There truly is nothing more refreshing than being in the mountains, away from the city smog, and breathing deeply clean oxygen.

Photosynthesis is the process that allows plants to capture energy from the sun and produce its own food. This video from Amoeba Sisters explains the process in pretty simple terms that aids in a better understanding. Along with the simple terms, the sisters do a great job incorporating diagrams and graphics to their videos. They are definitely a favorite of mine for all things science.

This is the white fringeless orchid (Platanthera integrilabia). The orchid is found in only 9 spots in Georgia, and it is estimated that only 100 plants bloom each year. It is a flowering plant, so it is part of the angiosperm land plant group. It is also of the monocot group.

Half of the temperate grassland has been converted to crop production, urbanization, and other land uses. This has led to habitat loss and declining biodiversity.

Prior to agriculture, it is estimated that the human population was six to ten million people. This was about the limit of hunter/gatherers that the Earth could sustain. After the agricultural revolution, there was a large spike in population. At the time of the Ancient Romans, it is estimated the population was 250 million. There is belief women no longer needing to carry their infants around while they migrated, they were able to have more children. The birth rate went from a baby born every four years to one born every 2 years. Also, farming allowed for more food which supported a larger population. This all led to a 25-fold increase.

Below is a picture of a gas powered Combine. A combine combines the processes of reaping, thrashing, and winnowing into one. It basically, cuts the crop, separates the seeds from the crops, and blows it off to be collected. I chose this picture because I am actually inside the combine on a friend's soybean farm in Indiana.

The beautiful poppy flower. What looks so beautiful can be the cause more than 130 deaths each and every day. Opium is derived from the sap of opium poppies. Opium was first used as a pain relief by the Egyptians and Persians. In modern times, it has become a worldwide epidemic. Starting in the 90s when pharmaceutical companies campaigned that too many Americans suffer in pain, and their new drug was safe and non-habit forming. They wined and dined doctors to help push their medicine, Oxycontin. This led to many people prescribed the medicine. In as little as a week on a prescription, taking the recommended amount, one can form a chemical addition. This led to an even bigger crisis when people started turning to the street drug version when they could no longer get a prescription. In 2018, opiod addition was responsible for over 15,000 deaths in America alone, making it one of the most influential plant derived chemical.

If everything is left unchecked, we would not have much of a world to live in. Without some regulations for environmental purposes, our planet would become a place that would not be able to handle human life. With out of control political structures, our world would become war ravaged. Socially and economically, the entire world would collapse. This picture demonstrates an empty city that has been taken over by what wildlife is left.
