It is a good way to listen to a student and see what they are struggling with. If a student is only having trouble with /o/ sounds and different sounds /O/ can make with other letters a teacher would be able to see that during a running record and could help a student with that. It is also a way to check for fluency, comprehension and decoding skills.

Running records allow a teacher to see patterns in the student’s miscues that could signal to the teacher that a student is relying too heavily on one cueing system. The teacher could then focus on helping students to use the cueing system or systems that are lacking. The way a student approaches difficult words can also help provide the teacher with valuable information about strategies the student make be lacking.

It is a good way to decide on mini lessons, small group, or whole group lessons that need to happen.

Teachers can learn about what kinds of cues are being violated or used correctly when decoding. Running records can also assess a reader's comprehension. Teachers can calculate the accuracy of a students' reading and keep notes on common errors children might be making consistently. Teachers can use running records to place students into reading groups based on needs, provide next-step feedback for students, and to implement intervention strategies for students according to individual needs.

These are often sheets that can be used to write down if a student is replacing words, self-correcting, repeating unknown areas of text. This also provides a great assessment sheet to show parents when they come in.

A running record is an assessment tool which provides an insight into a student's reading as it is happening. A running record is beneficial for teachers as it can determine what each child needs based on their performance. This allows for students and teachers to assess a plan to help aid the student based on results. I think this is a great tool for students to be able to grow and develop within their reading skills based on their needs.
