      - If we want the other person to have a good first impression of us, we have to use appropriate verbal cues such as tone.
      - If the person we are talking to someone that has a higher status, we may tend to use a softer tone and vocal intensity with longer pause lengths.

-Communicating Status and Intimacy
       - Code switching - choosing how to speak to people of different status
                               
        - When we are talking to someone of a higher status, we will change our speaking tone to be slightly intimate with them, while at the same time maintaining professional verbal cues.

1. The Perspective-Taking Model
Strangers rely on social conventions and rules about interpersonal communication. They categorize other participants and use stereotypes as a basis for making inferences about the plans and intentions of the other person(s) who are present in the setting.

2.Nonverbal communication--Choice of Personal Effects
Though we usually think of communication as expressed through our bodies, people also
communicate nonverbally through the personal effects they select—their choices of clothing, hairstyle, makeup, eyewear (contact lenses), and the like. A uniform, for example, may communicate social status, political opinion, lifestyle, and occupation, revealing a great deal about how its wearer is likely to behave (Joseph & Alex, 1972).

3.  Social Stratification and Speech Style
In the United States, as in many other countries, speech style is associated with social status.
The use of standard speech is associated with high socioeconomic status and with power. People in positions of economic and political power are usually very articulate and grammatically correct in their public statements. In contrast, the use of non-standard speech is associated with low socioeconomic status and low power.

Sociolinguistic Competence
Speakers are expected to use language that is appropriate to the status of the individuals they are discussing and to their relationship of intimacy.

4. Status
A shift in forms of address signals a change in social relationships, or at least an attempted change.

The way we communicate with others differ based on our status in relation to theirs.
 
1. To what extent do you agree with that statement?
Yes, we do totally agree with this statement as we have experienced such situations, especially in our professional lives. Example, the way we communicate with a friend would be different as compared to an authoritative figure.

2. Elaborate your stance using FOUR (4) points as discussed in the textbook or other reading materials.

- Communicating Status and Intimacy
When conversing with someone who we are close to, we wouldn't have to refer to them by their titles as compared to someone we weren't close to. We would also talk less around people we have distant relations with. For example, a student would talk less with the teacher as compared to talking with friends.

- Intersubjectivity
In order for communication to be successful, it depends on intersubjectivity. This means that the participant would need to have information about the other person's status, plans or intentions. For example, one could be friendly to a person he/she met on the street because they do not know about their royal status, but once found, they would be less friendly and more formal using the appropriate language.

- Social Linguistic Competence
The concept states that language must be appropriate in the social and cultural context. Speakers are expected to use appropriate language to the status and their relationship. For example, a group of friends might be used to speak with heavy usage of slang and hence not able to take an interview with an expert for an academic paper unless they use a more academic speech.

- Social Structure and Communication
The way we communicate with other people reflects and influence the relationship. This means that the impact is based on the other persons social or organizational context. For example, the way we talk to elders would be different as to how we talk with classmates because of the different social context.

1. One can apply the theory of speech accommodation, whereby in the case when one is disagreeing he/she will diverge own speech behaviour from the other. When using it one will change own speech rate, vocal intensity and pronunciation in order to share own opinion will do it calmly and with respect even if the elderly relative is shouting or aggressively defending own opinion.
2. Feedback and Coordination
React to the points that the relative gives to give him a sense that you indeed appreciate it. One can use vocal and visual comments like nod the head in those parts that they agree, or question like "what?", ''Huh?" Alternatively when in disagreement with an elderly person you make react by asking supportive question towards the argument especially when you dont agree for example let them know you dont see things from their perspective.
3. Regulating Turn-Taking
Pervasive rule of conversation to avoid bumping into others.we can use verbal and nonverbal cues to degrees of success.

According to The Cooperative Principle
•A speaker must cooperate with a listener by formulating the content of speech, so it reflects the listener’s way of thinking about objects, events, and relationships. Thus, the speaker may change the way to communicate depends on different targets/ status.

According to Inter-subjectivity concept, •Successful communication depends on inter-subjectivity. Each participant needs information about the other’s status, view of the situation, and plans or intentions.

According to sociolinguistic
- competence speakers are expected to use language that is appropriate to the status of individuals they are conversing with. One of the ways status is presented is through personal effects (refers to what we wear). Therefore an individual may be more likely to use more formal language when speaking to someone in a suit compared to someone dressed more casually (jeans and t-shirt).


Status Power
- Status is concerned with the exercise of power and control.
- In certain situations, status holds more power when communicating with each other, regardless of whether the person is smart or not. For example, sometimes those are of higher status are taken more seriously and are more respected than those who are of lower status.
