Literature has highlighted that nurses' lack of knowledge and confidence in wound management as well as time constraints in clinical practice, affect efficient management of chronic wounds. However, through easily accessible evidence-based resources, such as mobile apps, positive improvements in patient care are noted (Kulikov et al, 2019).

Through providing support and education the app will empower nurses and improve their confidence levels, which has been directly correlated to improving wound management, patient satisfaction and outcomes (Innes-Walker et al., 2019). Milner et al (2020) further asserts that mobile apps improve knowledge and confidence.

It also facilitates timely decision-making at the bedside through access to information in real-time (Giles-Smith et al., 2017; Mather et al., 2018). This helps nurses' feel supported and confident, which is particularly important for practice nurses who often work alone (Lumbers, 2019).

Weaknesses

Weaknesses that have been established include, a lack of technical and literacy skills, which vary significantly between socioeconomic and sociodemographic groups. Other barriers include patient accessibility and affordability. This discrepancy could negatively impact patient outcomes and further increase health and social inequalities (Ricciardi et al., 2019).

Another area of concern is that of workplace barriers, such as, the time required to train nurses in using the app efficiently. A lack of resources and time to incorporate training and education before use will inhibit practice and reduce nurse compliance thereby leading to failed implementation of the app (Curran et al., 2019; Zaidi et al., 2020). Therefore, practices would need to commit to adequately and regularly training and educating staff to ensure correct implementation.

An opportunity that can set general practices apart from others through implementation of the proposed idea includes, an organised approach to healthcare delivery that is focussed on "consumer-centric" healthcare. Allowing patients to have greater autonomy in the self-management and shared decision-making towards their health goals and needs (Ricciardi et al., 2019). This will help promote healthcare and prevention and enable individualised care.

It also has the opportunity to increase trust between the nursing team and the patient, as the patient can be assured that care being performed is consistent and held to a particular standard, as each nurse follows the recorded care plan detailed in the app (Lumbers, 2019).

Threats

Threats that could impede the implementation of the app, as stated by Kulikov (2019) comprise of, whether it is easy to use, and discerning between what is evidence-based and relevant. For the app to be effective it would need to incorporate a layout design that is easily accessible, have information that is evidence-based and relevant to general practice chronic wound care management.

Another impediment is that of security. As apps wirelessly transmit and receive health data it can be exposed to various security and privacy violations. Thus, it is vital for practices to maintain patient confidentiality and trust through ensuring that mobile apps contain secure settings and logins (Ullah et al., 2021).
