making machines better and more effective than the other country. Also getting better spacecraft. 

Who could put the first aircraft into orbit? It was a competition between the US and Russia on who would be the first country to make it into orbit. Russia ended up being the first country into orbit. It was just another thing to be competitive about.

who would be the first on the moon?
The countries also competed against who could get the best machinery to land on the moon. The goal was to make it to the moon, land on it, and research it. Since they were better, they brought them home for everyone to use.

Wireless headsets- these were used inside of the astronauts' space suits, and since they were wireless they were more convenient. So then again, they made enough of them for the general public to use. 

Freeze-dried food- This was the food they packed for space because it got really cold and dry up there, and they couldn't have the food spoil and dry out. Since everyone thought it was a good idea, they brought it home for the people again.
