Then at 8:14 am, United Airlines Flight 175, with 65 people aboard, took off from Boston; it was also headed to Los Angeles. A little after at 8:20 am, American Airlines Flight 77 took off from Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C. This plane was headed to Los Angeles with 64 people aboard. At 8:41 am, United Airlines Flight 93, with 44 people aboard, took off from Newark International Airport headed to San Francisco. It had been scheduled to depart at 8:00 am, around the time of the other hijacked flights but was delayed.  Later, flight attendants aboard Flight 11 alerted ground personnel that the plane had been hijacked; American Airlines notified the FBI. Then, Hijacker Mohammed Atta made the first of two accidental transmissions from Flight 11 to ground control. He apparently was trying to communicate with the plane’s cabin. Ultimately, Mohammed Atta and the other hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 11 crashed the plane into floors 93-99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the building. 17 minutes later hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 75-85 of the WTC South Tower, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the building. Later at 9:37 am, Hijackers aboard Flight 77 crashed the plane into the western side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. killing 59 aboard the plane and 125 military and civilian personnel inside the building. The final event occurred at 10:07 am, after passengers and crew members aboard the hijacked Flight 93 contacted friends and family and learned about the attacks in New York and Washington, they mounted an attempt to retake the plane. In response, the hijackers deliberately crashed the plane into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all 40 passengers and crew aboard.

In New York City, the two planes hit identical towers called the Twin Towers. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane was thought to be headed for the White House, Capitol Building, or Camp David as a threat to the president. The fourth plane did not reach its destination due to heroic actions from the passengers. All of the damage that happened ended up to be 3.3 trillion dollars for the United States of America. It dropped the DOW Jones nearly 700 points and it closed for 4 full trading days! Another major thing is that the U.S. shut down all airports for the first time in history. The airline industry lost nearly 5 billion dollars total. In addition, about 4.8 billion dollars was spent making the security in the airport better to prevent further attacks. Many new and stricter laws have been added to try and help our country not have any attacks like this again. The U.S. has spent over 589 billion dollars on creating something called Homeland Security. It changed not only the nation we live in, but other nations across the world. Before the events, it was thought that the U.S was undefeatable and couldn’t be hurt. This attack changed that perception. It made US citizens think that we can be vulnerable. The September 11 attacks have been a really fortunate and unfortunate event to happen to our country. We have been fortunate to come together as a nation after all this misery.
