<title>Date: 21 September, 2017Objective 1: Video CommentaryThe novelist Chimamanda Adichie in her speech highlighted the story how she found her true cultural identity. She raised issues based on the perception of one’s identity through the media and Western literature and how this has caused there to be and increased level of stereotypes. These problems according to Chimamanda, was due to power and a greater focus being played on differences as opposed to similarities and the misconception of being a different race or having a different religious outlook which have indeed created further segregation of persons worldwide. She also makes mention of class structures in Nigeria and how that influenced her perception of others like her house boy Fide and his family. These issues can be related to Caribbean society and culture from the period during colonialism and enslavement and even in the modern Caribbean. What is it to be Caribbean? Well, some may say that Caribbean people are uneducated, poor, undeveloped and black. However, this misconception has been the perspective of many persons in Europe who have been deceived by literature and academic teachings during colonization. For instance, the myths created during colonization and spread through literature included the lie that the Caribbean was first discovered by Columbus. In Professor Ivan Van Sertima book ‘They Came before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America’ highlights evidence of the presence and legacy of African in ancient America which proves the myth of Columbus discovering the Caribbean false. Even though slavery and colonialism has passed, many persons do not know the full story as they can only account for the perspective thought to them. As such many still believe in white supremacy and continue to associate the Caribbean as an undeveloped region of poor uneducated individuals. Also, in recent times the only thing being broadcasted by international media houses are the disasters that plague the Caribbean. They focus on highlighting the negative picture but fails to broadcast to the world the rich cultural diversity, the innovation and talents of individuals in the region. It is important to remember how important facts and stories are because they create a picture that many globally will believe. Looking at stories from alternative perspectives opens up one’s mind and allows for the truth to be revealed. Caribbean individuals need to make it a priority to find their true identity and this can be done through revisionism.</title>
