WHAT IS THE ART FOR YOU?

I started to study performance art two years ago, due to the fact that I love the theater and I dream of being a big actress. However, now I don´t know what it means to be a big actress to my country. A lot of people think that getting culture is to watch all the soap operas that exist, to watch some series, to watch Netflix, sometimes to go to the cinema to watch movies that don´t even leave a transcendental message, to look at magazines about fashion or gossiping, for instance, Vanidades or Caras and to know everything about the most famous "actors" in the country and around the world. Nevertheless, Do people in this country, really know about the art and culture of theater?

The theater is to put on stage, some people alive, completely naked, willing to let the public judge their body, all their movements, their emotions and even their being. However, in my opinion it is an incredibly devalued job because there is not anyone who sees it. For instance, when you ask people in your environment about the theater, they do not know anything; they are lost. Nevertheless, if you ask the same people about the evening´s soap opera, they will probably know everything. All of a sudden the theater seems to be disappearing in this country.

I have done two big performances and I know that there is always a concern to fill the theater. Due to the fact that an actor is always thinking about how difficult it is to do theater, because in Colombia one must be a producer and director too. For instance, the actor is acting, is putting on lights, promoting the play, testing sounds and doing a thousand other things. Nevertheless, although he can do everything, if the public wants to arrive, it is not responsibility of the actor. To sum up, this country has a big problem with the cultural responsibility and with the notion of art.

According to the Dane the only 17,6% of the Colombian population attends plays, opera and dance. Which of course rectifies that cultural consumption is minimal in relation to the total Colombian population. Nevertheless, if cultural consumption was promoted more, the numbers would increase and the statistics would change. In conclusion, the people of the country must change their way of thinking. The soap operas are not art, the magazines are not art. Art are forms of living expression, that moves, that impacts, that transgresses. It is not difficult to get culture, it is time to change, not to let yourself be manipulated and start thinking on your own.
