In chapter 9 the librarian recognizes Bud from when his mom used to come in Bud looks in the book indicating mileage and determines that Flint and Grand rapids are 120 miles apart.120/5 is a 24 hour walk .The librarian gives Bud a book about the civil war and a sandwhich for the road.
