Exit Ticket 6 by Jessica Williams

What are some crucial conversations you have had? How might you change them if you could go back to incorporate some mentoring language or even different body language to change the outcome of the situation? How will you use this lesson moving forward in your work as a mentor?

The crucial conversation I had was about students who were failing the class. The conversation was not done in person but over an email to begin with putting it in a very attacking way to begin with and it moved to be an in-person conversation with both parties on the defense. No resolution was formed due to that.

Gratitude. Silence.

The biggest things that I want to incorporate are gratitude and silence. People want to be noticed! If I can at least just notice people and show them gratitude for the ways they contribute to our culture and community in a positive way, I think it would make a huge difference in the morale of the teachers and students.
Silence is also another piece that I would like to incorporate more in my own practices as a teacher but also with other teachers in meetings and time to reflect.

I had a crucial conversation with a team of people a few weeks ago. The team was needing an outlet to vent about some challenging students. I wasn't able to bring the changes they felt needed to happen at a quick enough pace and my answers weren't coming across as helpful. I personally wasn't able to take a step back, and reflective on how I was taking some of the conversation personally, and in that moment, lost all my mentor skills, and recognition of my own body language. I think having a group of people feeling frustrated overwhelmed me. I generally can navigate small group or 1:1 conversations fairly well.

I think just remembering that in a group of people, I need to make sure I continue to be an empathic listener, even if I'm repeating myself. Also, to get a group to switch from frustration to problem solving - maintaining a relaxed body language and also using lots of mediative questions to get them thinking about "what if" scenarios.

The next time I meet with this group - we will have an agenda ahead of time. I also think it would be helpful for us to go through a quick norms creation process, so that we can refer back to it if anyone's emotions start to bubble up too much, and to focus on staying productive and solution oriented.

I had a crucial conversation with a staff member this week about their behavior and attitude in the workplace. In preparation of this conversation, I collect my data and create a list to help me stay on topic. In that list I created, I also had my feelings and expectations. I was very nervous but it better than I had planned.

Next time when I have crucial conversations with staff members, I am going to work on being a better listening, try harder to put myself in their shoes and provide clear perspective. When I had this conversation with that staff member, I was told that I handled it very well for my first time. The feedback that I got was, that I just need to build my confidence in my body language to not be hesitant when providing my facts or observations.

I want my new teachers to have strong support and an easy transition into their new position. I think even some of our old teachers could use a mentor program that helps with administration transitions.

It started with a casual question about how her child came home after school one day. Mom said her child told her what she said. Mom then proceeded to tell me how she handled it at home and that she supported how I handled it in school.

Our conversation took place in the classroom after a concert with other children and parents around. I wasn't prepared for her to launch into a conversation. I just asked a simple yes or no question.
