Direct Aggression

Direct Aggression is a communication style in which an individual focuses on their interests and verbally/physically abuses the other party.

This scene is a great example of direct aggression. To give some background Bucky just escaped from the shield detention facility and Ross is aggravated. Ross uses direct aggression with interruptions and insults on Tony's character. There is a lot of accusatory "you" language in the communication. We can see this when Ross says that Tony is not objective in his decision making and he completely ignores Tony's arguments at the start. Tony gets right back at Ross by interrupting him with all due respect. Interruption imp[lies that the person thinks what they have to say is much more important than what the other person has to say. It is a very assertive mode of communication. Along with the assertiveness, direct aggression includes mostly "i" language in which an individual gives their own beliefs.

With this conflict style, it just says that one side of the party win the situation and the other half loses it. In this scene, the Avengers debate about whether or not they are will to surrender their freedom to help the world of its chaos and be supervised under the United Nations. Tony is well aware of the Avengers action that have cost the lives of citizens, it relates back to the first Ironman, when Tony stopped making weapons because he saw the devastation that it brought, when his weapons where in the wrong hands.

Self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation of an event, followed by behaviors based on that expectation, that makes the outcome more likely to occur than would have been the case otherwise.

The Avengers were a group of people who had high expectations for their selves. Half of the world thought they did a good job on protecting the world, but others thought they didn't do so well of a job. After the secretary of state talk about the accords some of the team members expectations changed about possible agreeing with the comments that were made. While gathered at the table and talking about the accords more into depth Captain America said "The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place I feel we've done that."

After talking about The Sokovia Accords several times the Avengers faced several conflicts. Those conflicts caused the Avengers to split up and turn against each other. Tension amongst the team members started to building which made things stale in certain things and unstable in others. They started seeing things different from each other which built rivalry and the split. As they came together to fight each other more tension was built, but afterwards they started to see why Captain America was doing what he was doing. Even though tension was built they found stability and change amongst their selves.

Collaboration

Collaboration conflict style involves both parties sharing their beliefs to come to a common goal. This most often requires both people to change their original views to come to an agreement. Tony is giving an olive branch to Steve by exposing the personal reasons he has to sign the accords. Reciprocation is a central part of collaboration as both parties have to participate for a win-win solution to develop. Steve reciprocates by giving his thoughts on the bill. They also relate on not being able to stop their heroic endeavors. This helps them come to a better understanding of each other. Tony focuses on the good things that will come from Steve's signature rather than the restrictions. Then Tony agrees to make some concessions in the future so Steve can sign the bill and hope for an improved law in the future. Collaboration requires both sides to meet in the middle and that is what TOny and Steve do in this scene.

Passive Aggression

The main villain Zemo in Civil War uses passive aggression by manipulation. Zemo is a furious man who lost his family due to a battle that the Avenger’s where previously in. Zemo used Bucky as a way to channel his anger by learning the brainwashing frequency to have mind control over Bucky’s actions. A perfect example of this is when he used Bucky to plant a bomb in Vienna. Instead of Zemo doing it himself he used Bucky as a way to keep the Avengers in disarray. This also made Bucky look like a terrorist even though it wasn’t his actions it was Zemo. An Additional example of passive aggression is the footage Zemo planted of Tony Stark's parents being killed by Bucky while he was brainwashed by Hydra. Zemo knew he wasn’t strong enough to fight the Avengers so he used the past events to help cause chaos within the Avengers. He used Bucky as a way to show his dissatisfaction and anger with the Avengers.

Relational Transgression

A good example of relational transgression is the relationship between the Avengers and the governments of the world. In Marvel’s Civil War the Avengers are told that they cannot exist without following the guidelines (The Sokovia Accords) constructed by the governments of the world (approved by 117 countries). Before this document was presented the Avengers had the option to fight against criminals or villains freely or travel to locations without any restraints. With the Sokovia accord being presented it disrupts what has already been in established for the Avengers. Instead of freely making choices they have to receive permission from the governments of the world.

Aggressiveness is one of the more destructive ways of communication, when tensions start building up between one another. After Tony learns that is was Bucky who killed his parents, and later finding out that Captain America was aware of Bucky's actions, Tony proceeds to attack both. Captain tries to explain to Tony that Bucky was under mind-control by Hydra and it really wasn't Bucky. Tony refuses to listen and continues his assault.
