A group of students came together to protest against segregated lunch counters. At the time, colored people could not enter establishments when whites required the service. However, young African Americans would often engage in sit-ins, which was just sitting in the restaurant despite being prompted to leave, therefore challenging discrimination and segregation in public areas.

A man named James Meredith was admitted to an all-white university by Ole Miss in 1962, causing riots and anger from the public. This event was a show of the government's willingness to use force to start advocating for African American Civil Rights.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was an African American man who was determined to give a voice to his fellow people of color. During The March on Washington, he delivered his speech painting a picture of a future where whites and blacks are equal, where African Americans no longer have to face discrimination and prejudice. This was a movement that not only got a lot of people involved, but had a powerful impact on the movement of Civil Rights.

Civil Rights Act, 1964

In 1964, the Civil rights act was signed, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This challenged the legality and justification of discriminating against someone, often African Americans, based on one key part of them.

Voting Rights Act, 1965

The Voting Rights Act prohibited states from imposing qualifications or practices to deny the right to vote on account of race. This act challenged racial discrimination in the way that it made it illegal to deny African Americans the right to vote based on their history or education, or lack thereof.
