The summer I turned pretty by Jenny Han

The summer I turned pretty by Jenny Han is about a girl named belly who leaves her school life behind for the summer to spend it at cousin’s beach, the place she has spent every summer going to since she was little. And she has a crush on her mother’s best friend son, Conrad. The only thing Conrad thinks of her as a little sister.

I chose to read this book because I like cliché teenage romance stories. As a 16-year-old girl books with teenage love is an attention grabber for me. And the book “The summer I turned pretty” is almost exactly like that. Also the author Jenny Han wrote the book “To all the boys I’ve loved before” which I have not read yet, but I did watch the movie. The movie is probably not as good as the book but I still loved it and it made me want to read more books of hers.

I like this book so far due to the story line. There are certain plot twists that I didn’t know would pop up, so it keeps me more engaged, wanting to read more. Although sometimes I get impatient because I want something to happen in the story that I’ve been wanting to happen since the beginning of the book but doesn’t. So, I can get a little frustrated at times.

Since I like teenage romance this book is somewhat like other books I’ve read. But of course, each book is unique in their own way. And I have a different mindset, imagination, and perspective when I read different books.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I now am reading the book “Cinder by Marissa Meyer” which is about a world where humans and android do not really get along. Then cinder meets prince kai whom she finds herself suddenly attracted to him although its forbidden. I chose this book because its similar yet different from other books I’ve read. Meaning a lot of books, I read have a similar romance but this book has its own twist. Since cinder is an android it’s against the law to be with a human. Yet she still manages to fall for the prince. This book has the similar storyline of the Cinderella. This version is unique because the girl cinder is an android. But she still has an evil step mother who hates her, and two step sisters. So similar as the original version of Cinderella.

Although I am not very far in my book, I do think I am going to like it a whole lot. It is also part of a series and books that have another one after to continue the story is what I love most. Because if I really end up liking a book and want to read more than a series of book allows me to expand my imagination, and thinking towards the book. I get to know more about a character and how they mature throughout the books. One of the most things I’m excited about reading “Cinder” is finding out if her relationship with Prince Kai ends up working out. Or how she over comes the difference between her and Prince Kai

I am still reading the book Cinder by Marissa Meyer. And I want to talk about the setting from the book. Since it is a fiction book that involves a story about a prince and android. I think it was in the future type era. I’ve always pictured the future as robots running the world or more advanced technology taking over. And this book is somewhat, I think the future would turn out to be. Cinder has robots that are called androids that do what they are told by their owners. For an example Prince Kai has med-droids which are androids that have a specific job to treat diseases, and injuries around the kingdom. Another is a cyborg, which is half human and half android. And in this case Cinder is a cyborg. The way she is built is like a human girl except is computer operated. She understands everything but cannot express any type of emotion even when she knows she should. Although she does know when to “feel” an emotion.

A major conflict is between the humans, and androids/cyborg. The humans treat people like cinder like they are nothing because they are half robot. For an example Cinder’s step mom treats her like an object instead of a human being. Always telling her to fix something, and clean, and won’t let her go out unless she’s done what her step mother told her to do. She faces criticism from her own step mother and from the outside world just for being different than other others.

I’m still currently reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer. And I want to talk about the main character Cinder. She is independent and unique. Cinder went through a lot in her childhood. Just at 11 years old she was involved in traumatic accident that caused her to have surgery. She doesn’t remember much after her surgery except that she got adopted by her stepfather and stepmother. After being adopted not long after her stepfather passed away and was stuck with her stepmother, who had a strong hatred for cinder. So, growing up every day she had to deal with her stepmother being disrespectful, and rude to her. Her stepmother would always remind her how she wasn’t wanted and that she had no other choice but to be her stepmother. This taught Cinder to be independent and not rely on her stepmother for anything. She made a living off being a mechanic, and helping androids that need fixing. She does everything on her own and never asks her stepmother for anything and this tells me she is independent.

I say she’s unique because she is a cyborg. Half human and half robot. And not a lot of people in her country are that combo. Its either you’re human or an android. Also, because she’s a mechanic. Not a lot of girl her age are mechanics. Not a lot mechanics are even girls. So for her to be a mechanic and a really skilled one is what makes her unique.. I love my life so freaking much here

The Hate U give by Angie Thomas

I recently started reading a new book called The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It’s about a girl named Starr who witness her unarmed, childhood, best friend gets fatally shot by a white police officer. I love how the author knows that there are problems that need to be fixed, and addresses them in this book. This book interests me because it unfolds the reality in today society. Just like in the book there are bunch of news going around about how a black person gets killed by a white police officer. And yet nothing is changed to prevent this violence. And the investigation would turn up the same. The victims’ families are left devastated and to mourn over their loved one’s death while the police officer would be let off the hook, and serve no consequences. So, in the book Starr believes justice should be served and decided to speak up. Though speaking up could endanger her life and affect her neighborhood in many ways. Since Starr was the only person to witness the fatal shooting, if she were to speak up, there could be people accusing her of lying and could possibly send her death threats. She believes she has the right to get justice for her friend whom was murder for no reason. And I admire Starr for being brave enough to speak against the system, and how they ignore major problem. Using her voice will motivate others to speak up against the system and hopefully make changes in society.

In the book “The Hate U Give” the main character is Starr. She is the one who narrates the story in her emotions and thoughts. The story is based off her point of view. In the beginning of the book, it started off with Starr witnessing her childhood friend get fatally shot right in front of her by a white police officer. Since the incident Starr is faced with hard decisions that could affect her, and her family in many ways. She was the only person to witness Khalil getting killed and the only person who could bring justice. It takes courage and bravery to speak up upon the traumatic incident that occurred. If she were to speak out about how Khalil was killed for no reason, then she would receive backlash. People would think she’s lying to protect her friend or just simply won’t believe her because Khalil was black. Many people already thought that Khalil was dangerous, due to being a drug dealer. So, they automatically sided with the white police officer saying he was protecting himself.

I’m still currently reading the hate u give. And so far, it’s an empowering book. I’ve recently watched the movie based off the book and its very different. Obviously, the book is more detailed then the movie but both still bring an emotion out of me. I cried about 5 times watching the movie, because seeing the actors portray their character was so on point. The girl who played Starr really brought out the best in the character. She expressed her feelings in a way that made me feel sympathetic about Starr. I think all the actors played the role of their character perfectly. In the movie, a lot of detail was left from the book that I wished wasn’t. In the book, there was certain parts where I felt like it would’ve made the movie more interesting and thrilling to see on screen. If the director of the movie could get every little detail that was in the book, then the movie would’ve been 10 times more better in my opinion. There also were certain parts in the movie I did not read in the book. Although the movie still got the point across about police brutality, I recommend to always read the book before the movie. So, you can compare, and contrast what was good in the book and the movie. I also must say the book is always better than the movie. The book has more detail that makes it interesting while the movie is shorten version that isn’t very detailed but still gets the purpose across.

I finished reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. And to me that was the most heartache book I have ever read. It brought out many emotions as I was reading. It had me wondering at every cliff hanger what would happen next. I was on edge for half of the book. What I love most about The Hate U Give is that the author brought the reality of police brutality. She made a common issue in society into a book. She included the usual outcomes from a white police officer fatally killing a black teen. The author made sure to let her audience know the harsh truth behind the justice system. Another thing I loved about the book, is the purpose of it. Which is to stay true to yourself. The main character Starr had two versions of herself. Garden heights Starr and Williamson Starr. Garden Heights Starr was the girl who can be herself, talk the way she wants, and dress how she wants. While William Starr was the girl who gave people no reason to call her ghetto. She talked properly, and greeted her white, classmates, nicely. So, throughout the book Starr kept switching between the two versions of herself. Towards the end of the book she realized how she should be who she is, and not change herself so that people can like her. In other words, she decided to true to herself. Over all I think The Hate U Give was one the best books I have read. I would rate this book a 11/10 and recommend it for anyone to read it and cry like I did.

I’m currently reading a new book called The Wrath & The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh. I’ve heard good reviews about this book from my other classmates that had read it. I only read a few pages since I barely got the book yesterday, but I think it is going to be a great book so far. This book is about a woman who decided to be the wife of a king who always ends up killing his “wifes” before sun rise. The reason she decided to do this was to get revenge the king for killing her best friend. So, I think I will enjoy this book for the thrill of her plotting to kill the king, without her dying before sun rise. When I start really getting into this book, I hope I expect a plot twist or something I didn’t see coming. One thing I hope doesn’t happen in the story is an ironic love story. Where the king and the women end up falling in love with each other and she doesn’t end p c completing her task to murder him. I would be somewhat disappointed. I want the author to write about how women cannot be manipulated or strong enough to do things. I want the author to hopefully prove to me that women can do a mission even when it sounds absurd. For the women to be brave enough to plan to kill the king is something I would enjoy reading about. So I am hoping for the best and not typical outcome of this book.

In my last blog I was writing about how I started reading a new book. Well change of plans I am reading another new book called “shatter me”. I found this book in when we did the book trade. It was the only book that caught my attention. If you know me then you know how I love cheesy romance, mystery, fantasy, thriller, and supernatural books. And this book involves all of them. “shatter me” is about a girl who has a unique power. Whenever she touches someone, she causes the person to go into excruciating pain that can kill them. The feeling she gets from it is satisfying to her. Although it makes her feel good, she doesn’t like hurting people. So, she avoids getting near people as much as possible. But for Juliette it is not that simple. Having someone that uses her power as a weapon makes it hard for her to avoid hurting others. She was given up by her parents when she was little and has been locked up in a small room for most of her life. She the guy that kept her locked up only wants her, so she can be by his side to kill. He knows what she’s capable of and uses that to her advantage. Due to all this Juliette is very isolated from everyone. She doesn’t talk to anyone unless she must and keeps to herself most of the time. She feels as if she can’t trust anyone.

I recently finished reading the book “shatter me” and I think it was a good book. Throughout the book I noticed a huge character development with the main character, Juliette. In the beginning Juliette was very quiet and kept to herself. She learned to take care of herself since she was locked in a small room for half of her life. She never really had anyone to talk to so whenever Adam randomly got thrown in the same room as her it brought out a different side of her. Turns out she knew who Adam was before she got locked away. He went to the same elementary school as her. He had been her crush since then. Although she knew who he was, she did not want to interact with him in fear of accidentally killing him. So, she avoided him as much as possible. Once she found out that she can touch Adam without hurting him, she got out of her shell. She started communicating to him more and eventually caught feelings. After escaping the facility, she was locked in with Adam they found a safe haven. While at the safe haven she met new people with unique powers like herself. Upon meeting these new people, she didn’t feel like an outcast no more. She started accepting who she was as a person. She became confident and wasn’t afraid of using her powers if needed. And to me I think this was a big character development. Being quiet and self-reserved to confident is a major change.

New blog, new book. I am currently reading a book called After by anna Todd. The reason I decided to read this book was because I heard good reviews. It originally came from the app called Wattpad where you can write about anything you want. This book was a fanfiction for one direction at first before it became popular to the point it got published. Since her book was getting published anna Todd had to change the name of her characters so no member of one direction would be offended in any way. As far as I read into this book and from I heard….there is going to be a lot of plot twists through out the whole book. I think the author would have the reader on the edge of their chair and keep them thinking differently about the characters. In a way I hope this book brings out all types of emotions from me. Like sad, upset, annoyed, and empathy. I also hope I am shooketh throughout the story.
