Camp: Notes on Fashion by FIT Online Learning

When you watch the Met Gala on Monday, May 6, I would like you to pay some attention to dresses you'd be impressed with. In the exhibition on Friday, May 10, I would like you to find a work exhibited in the gallery that could be related to a celebrity dress you've watched on TV or in the magazine. In the youtube video above, curators are explaining the meaning of camp as something exaggerated, humorous, or parodied. Se camper was an original verb used in the seventeenth century to describe a masquerade or a theatrical parade. Which designer in your mind embodied the sentiment best in the exhibition? How much labor would have been put into for the creation of such an extravagant, humorous, whimsical work? Is this an aesthetic expression? If so, why is it? Please answer these questions in the padlet assignment. This is your last museum assignment. On May 17, you will submit a final project on an artist you chose. That is to be submitted at the Blackboard.

All of the designs in this exhibition were absolutely mesmerizing. However, to me the designer that better embodied the term “Camp” was Michael Travis. He was the costume designer for famous, extravagant pianist Liberace. This garment looks like it requires many hours of hard work to be able to place each piece of crystal in the right place to create the overall look he had envisioned.

While the dressed on display are completely made up of feathers, the two Versace gowns are a combination of things to be considered camp including sequins round or exaggerated details and showing of the body form. I feel Kylie Jenner’s dress shares the most in common since she has the large round arm feathers.
1/3

Its fullness and skirt looking pleats and whole styling of the ourfit shows its genderless side.
The two suits Alessandro Michele and Harry Styles wore on Met gala are hard to tell those were womens wear or mens wear. The suit Michele wore is made of fabric something usually for dress and the suit Styles wore has black sear which I've never seen on men's suit.
I loved that fashion got more unconstrained and out of streotypes.

Bjork’s swan dress by Marjan Pejoski at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s

The white swan dress in the exhibition was my favorite garment because it is simple yet thought out carefully. I think it is similar to the dress Emily Ratajkowski wore because it also has the element of a monotone color scheme, which plays around with fabric texture rather than visual colors. As a fashion design major, I think finding fabrics of the same color that will work together is extremely difficult because it automatically limits the options. The simpler the design, the harder it is to execute. Designs with a lot of decorations and flare tend to get too crowded and I believe each garment should have one focus point. Each element of the dress should compliment each other, not fight for the stage. I think the swan dress embodies the masquerade look because it has a very simple silhouette with a very direct meaning. People can clearly see what the dress resembles. Why bother making a theatrical dress if no one could understand what it is? I think that defeats the purpose.

The comparison I chose is these outfits by Ashish Gupta (left) and the dress Hailee Steinfeld wore to the Met Gala (right), designed by Viktor & Rolf. What drew the comparison in my mind is the use of bold text that is central to the design, taking up most of the front-facing real estate, as well as the bright, almost garish colors. The text on Hailee's dress is ironic, punctuated by the fact she carried with her a (seemingly diamond encrusted) camera. While Gupta's text is more sincere, there is something similarly cheeky about both; for Gupta, it is the way the bold, simple, almost sappy message supersedes the design, while with Steinfield it has more to do with the way it clearly contradicts the purpose of the dress in the first place (which is to be photographed in it).

When it comes to who at the exhibit embodied camp the best, I don't know if I could pick, because there were so many examples. The bizarre Vogue-inspired outfit by Gianni Versace (bottom) is one of my top picks, though. Something about its uncanny, artificial look mixed with the gaudy, bright colors synthesizes well with the statement it is making about the disparity between our humanity and our fashion ideals, while doing so in a manner that is both lighthearted and visually interesting. Given the amount of embroidery and beadwork that this garment includes, I can only imagine it took a lot of labor. I would be curious to know how many people were involved in its production. This definitely constitutes an aesthetic of expression - it is not the kind of garment someone would wear on a daily basis, and is absolutely intended to express a particular message and mood. It is a subtle critique of our obsession with fashion, while simultaneously existing within the very sphere it is critiquing, in a self-aware manner that lends humor to the situation.

The dress Katy Perry wore reminded me of this dress from the exhibition that had a little circus going around it which was very interesting and cute. Both dresses look very uncomfortable to wear and I imagine you would end up bumping into a lot of people and things. They both look like they were handcrafted beautifully and with a whole lot of attention to detail going into them. It must have involved a lot of planning to get all the pieces to sit at the right spot and many hours must have gone into creating each dress. Both dresses also represent the more humorous side of camp fashion, some of the other outfits could have been worn practically but you would never wear these two dresses out on a normal day, they're not practical at all but they're meant to put on a show. A few designers that caught my interest and embodied camp were Versace, Gucci, and Balenciaga.

yuelinwu. the two balenciaga dress remind me about what kendal wore. especially the clothes with the butterfly on it is really interesting and gave me a lot of inspirations. and also to see what kendal wore. the clothes on her is more like a bird. thats makes her looks more attractive when she went to the show.
