These would work together to prevent the spread of illnesses and diseases. An example would be one animal becoming ill then others that share its space should be vaccinated and the disease be prevented from spreading such as washing bedding, throwing away toys for example when dealing with a zoonotic disease. If the disease is given the chance to spread it can lead to pain, secondary injuries or death as a worst case. Biosecurity would help to prevent further infection that could damage wildlife and therefore lead to a whole ecosystem eventually being killed off or becoming extinct.

An example of how Biosecurity works with Animal Welfare Science would be the spread of Foot and Mouth. This is spread via body fluid and the animal breathing into the air and at the height of the disease it was also found to be carried in the animal’s blood. Any animal with the infection would excrete the virus a few days before any signs of the disease being to develop. This can be spread mechanically by the movement of animals, people or vehicles along roads that could have also become contaminated so all none necessary transport to and from an infected farm was stopped. Clothing, skin and footwear from farmers could also carry the disease which can then spread to several other animals and birds and vermin could also carry the infection. The bodies of infected animals had to be culled and burned to prevent movement to and from farms that could lead to the spread of the disease from the animal or carcass, this therefore had to be carried out on the farm land. This decimated a high number of farmers livelihoods and lead to suicide being at an all-time high amongst the agricultural industry.
