He is still attached to breathing tubes. They are going to see if he can breath on his own.
His body tremors have stopped.  Yippie! The doctor has backed off his meds during the day however the sedation drugs were increased  last night due to Atrial fibrillation (unstable heart rhythm). 
RT lowered his rate from 12 to 8. and will try to see if he can breath on his own sometime today.  Possibly the tube will be removed. He seems to be tolerating the lower levels of oxygen.
Temp=37.5 c or 99.5 and they are controlling with Tylenol.

All of his breathing tubes are out. He was extubated yesterday around 5, and is breathing on his own! A feeding tube was inserted.
Bill is entirely off of sedation medication. Just Tylenol, aspirin, and an Antibiotic to help with the pneumonia and any other funny bacteria. Foley was replaced and a condom catheter was substituted for the foley. Less infection risk.
He was moved out of the ICU today.
His new room has a window so he now has some day light.
Bill had a bit of a temperature 100.4.
He is very foggy and still can not squeeze a hand on command.  He can move his legs, arms and head.
With Pneumonia he is trying to cough up the "gunk" but it may be painful since he has 6 broken ribs and a fractured sternum. He's fighting real har to get that stuff out of his lungs....so he's coughing.
He has no speech yet. 
PT and OT came in for his first work out.  Trying to lift his head, sit on the side of the bed, push back, brush his teeth, wash his face, but at this point it is 99.999% assisted movement. Again, small steps.
An MRI is scheduled for tomorrow morning and then Neurology will talk about the results.
I arrived early this morning around 7:30 so that we could Stream Saint James' Cathedral Live Mass from Seattle.  I placed one ear bud in his left ear and I had the right ear bud.
It was really nice to share Mass with him.  
I made a play list of all his favorite songs, including Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill". JUST SAYIN'!!!! 
For those who have watched Stranger Things Season 4, this will make total sense.

He was able to stick out his tongue at the neurologist when asked. Right now that's a wonderful sign that he's there. The PT's were able to support him in a sitting position and dangle his legs. Still non-verbal and fades in and out fighting to recover. Speech Therapy will see him today. The Case Manager has started to bring up SNF. I would like to see him at a intensive PT/OT/Speech facility. Today, Bill is so lucky to have Brian's TLC again. Brian is slammed with 5 rooms (including Bill) to cover now instead of just 2 in the ICU.  We want to Thank Brian from the bottom of our hearts, for his tireless care and excellent attention to Bill's needs and noticing the little details.  

Bill has been real busy today having PT, OT, Speech, Respiratory, Labs and now me. That's a full "Dance Card!"

He's coughing trying to clear his lungs from the nasty mucus stuff that has built up. RT is doing breathing treatments 3x a day and majorly using the suction to break up and remove the gunk.  His Coughing is GOOD!!!

Note to our readers: Never swallow Lake water! Ducks poop in lakes! 

His pneumonia is a "booger' and he now is on his third different antibiotic, Ampacillian. Fingers cross this antibiotic cocktail will do the trick. He has had a fever for several days. When I arrived 102 now around 101.  Breathing is heavy on he is on a High Flow.  RT plans to lower the oxygen a bit today to see how he does.

Speech services were in yesterday and today.  He's able to manage ice chips melting in his mouth and HE CAN and IS SWALLOWING! A major victory!  Swallowing is key.  Next step ice chips and a sip of water! If he's lucky maybe a lemon wedge served in his ice chip water.

He was able to nod his head yes today, blink when asked, open his mouth, open his eyes and move his arms. He still fades in and out. He is giving us great intentional signs that show us that he's moving in the right direction. 
He's still totally nonverbal. It takes time for the brain to slow down. We hold on to HOPE!

Ryne and Tim will be at the Hospital tomorrow since Tim will be leaving on Friday to go to San Francisco for Cousin Mary Kate's (John's Daughter) Wedding.  Ryne will Fly down early Saturday Morning to catch the celebration. His plan is to live stream the event for Bill and I to watch. I may just ask him just to video moments for Bill to watch when he's awake.
Tim will returns to his home in Denver on Sunday afternoon from SF.
Both boys have been a big support helping me notice where my limitations are. Letting me know to take a break to eat a sugar-free Dilly Bar or have a cup of tea.

His temp fluctuates at night into the morning topping out around 101, but with Tylenol and antibiotics brought it down this morning again to 98.9. 
He hasn't shaved for 18 days. 7 days in Canada fishing with John, plus adding the 11 days in the hospital. I packed up his electric razor, brought a towel and had him try to participate hand over hand to shave. He wasn't too happy with me, after 37 years of marriage, I could just tell. I realized the razor was in the left hand not the dominate right hand.  He had "that look"...come on DEB get it right! Let's just say, shaving male faces is beyond my expertise and above my pay grade!

When Ryne arrive he did hand over hand tooth brushing hygiene. Plus, some major tongue scrapping. Having no fluids for over 11 days, (besides "Lake Water") has left his mount extremely dry. Exhaling out his mouth, Caveman Mouth Breather Style, adds to the dryness. Ryne was able to remove tons of "Gunk" off his tongue and out of his mouth. You can tell that he was feeling better with a fresh shaven face and minty fresh breath. 

We fed him ice chips! He chewed them up and swallowed! Again, this is big, and he may have his feeding tube shut down in a few days.  Speech recommended 3 ice chips daily. We probably gave him 3 x 10 ice chips.  We would ask him if he wanted MORE and he shook his head YES. If he wants an ice chip HE GETS AN ICE CHIP! If he wants a Mercedes he gets a Mercedes.  Good thing he just got a new Rav 4 last year. Just Sayin'.

RT is administering breathing treatments which breaks up the congestion in his lungs. He is able to cough upon request now.
Note to Self: Never give him any 🤬 again for "Hockin' up Loogies!" 

Kidney, sodium and white cell number counts are elevated. They have him on a added fluid drip to bring the sodium levels down. The Doctor is looking at backing down a little on the antibiotic drip.

His plane is delayed by 2 hours so he gets to spend extra time with Bill this morning. 

Bill and Tim watched the NBA Finals last night together. According to Tim, Bill was able to watch most of the game. What a Game! Steph Curry is a basketball machine!

Bill is still nonverbal. He can move his arms and legs, move his feet when asked. He nods his head with simple Yes questions. He still is not able to squeeze hands yet.  
His temperature after Tylenol is now 98.3.  He seems to spike 101 degrees during the night. Tylenol seems to be doing the trick.

As for antibiotics I'm sure he's still receiving the IV dose but I haven't asked his nurse this morning about meds just yet.
Since his white cell count is up, the doctor has ordered a Kidney renal scan/test. Let's get more evidence what's going on internally. I'll let you know once I get the results.
I'm sure his 6 broken ribs and cracked sternum can't be comfortable. He's off of all his pain meds, they did give him a hit of morphine yesterday to calm his breathing down a bit.

He is still being fed by a tube, High Flow oxygen. His nurse did turn it down to the los 40's. Fingers crossed he can handle the low 30's and placed on Low flow soon. Today I will start with ice chips. Speech may allow him small sips of water and then graduate to APPLESAUCE! 

He's going to be in the hospital for at least another week. This afternoon was a snooze fest for Bill.  I don't even think he knew I was there.
His white count and sodium levels were elevated so they called in renal who did a scan of the kidneys and all the parts.  It seems Bill had developed a distended bladder. Simple solution...he's back on a Foley catheter. Since he's sleeping, he must be so much more comfortable.  
His temp remained at 98.3 all day. Hopefully, this means his infection and pneumonia is clearing up. Next step eating more ice chips, sips of water and like I said before, maybe a little APPLESAUCE for dessert. Today is is alert, eyes open and watching Lacrosse on TV.  He had a fever again this morning, major sweating prior to the fever breaking with the assistance of Injectable Tylenol into his tubes.

RT, 2 PT's and the 2 nurses all showed up at the same time.  I'm in the waiting room because 6 people can't fit in his tiny room.  
The Kidney doctor came in and explained his levels have gone down from 3.8 to 1.8. Plus, a lot of Doctor stuff... Bill nodded his head as if he was understanding EVERYTHING she was saying. AMAZING! 

Bill wanted to see what was in him, the Feeding Tube and Hi Flow breathing. I got his glasses on his head, whipped out my phone and turned the selfie on so he could see what he looked like and what he was hooked up to. He nodded. I took pictures of what he has hooked up on the pole to show him. I could see he understood.

His sodium levels are still up so they are diluting him with dextrose and fluids.
He was able to say a faint "YES" and "Back"  and is really struggling to tell me something.
I downloaded an app on my iPad for non verbal autistic called "Speak My Mind" my intent was for him to try to use this for simple commands, Yes, No, Help....however his fine motor isn't quite there yet to push the commands.
He is able to squeeze my wrists on command now.
So today, for now he's made a breakthrough.

Speech Therapist was able to clear a lot of stuff out of his mouth. He's much more comfortable. His oxygen was turned down to 40 for the afternoon. They will turn it back up to 60 at night.
He was given three, yes, three ice chips by the Speech Therapist nurse. Bill had this look of Nirvana in his eyes as he chewed and swallowed. Speech said his swallowing is not very strong. She is only allowing him 3 ice chips when he's awake and reduced oxygen so he doesn't aspirate. Who knew an ice chip could bring such satisfaction.  After the speech therapy nurse left and he said softly "CHIP" meaning Ice Chip...He knew...I smuggled another ice chip to him.

Bill will celebrate today by watching the US Open and taking his share of healing naps. 
Today is a sleepy day for him. His temperature  last night was 100.1, so Tylenol was not administered. This morning he's hanging at 98.3!!! Night Nurse did not have to turn his oxygen up last night. He maintained at 40. RT may move him to Low Flow (smaller nose tubes) oxygen soon.
I'lll be pushing speech to see if he can start with applesauce soon.  A "Pick"
(Stomach Tube) may be an option for nutrition if he physically can't start to eat soon. Nose feeding tubes are only good for about 10 days before they need to be changed. Everyone knows how much Bill can eat when given the chance.
My plan is to move this to a new Padlet now that he is out of ER, ICU and now on the main floor.
