A piece of work that I think shows my passion for Chinese is the My Alien Friend poster project that I did. I can't remember exactly which level it is from, but I think it is from Chinese one. In this project we had to create an alien friend and describe him. His appearance, his personality, and just all about his life in general. We also had to draw a picture of our alien friend. My alien was a little blue furry blob with purple splotches. I remember being so proud of it and I still am. I think this project shows my passion for Chinese because I worked very hard on it, both the drawing and the Chinese. While I have worked very hard on other Chinese projects, I do think that this is the one I am most proud of

A piece of work that I found really difficult was the family tree book project. Like the My Alien Friend project, I can't remember exactly when I did this project, which year, but I believe it was my sophomore year in Chinese one. In this project we all had to create a book with members of our family and friends in it. Similar to the Alien Friend project, we had to write about their physical appearance and their personality. We also had to write about how we were related to them/how we knew them, and whether or not we were close. I struggled with this because I really have a small family and I didn't know who to put or what to write for the people that I did put. I also wasn't great at Chinese (the language) itself which made the whole assignment that much harder. Even if I did know what to write in English chances were slim that I would be able to write it in Chinese. However, I persevered and worked very hard, not being afraid to ask for help. In the end the project turned out to be something that I was and still am proud of.

My studying of a world language has helped me a lot, both in understanding my role as a global citizen and with just life in general. Originally I wanted to learn Chinese because I saw it as a way to help me be in touch with my heritage and the language had just always interested me. Also I love learning languages and I was tired of people constantly asking me if I could speak Chinese and I wanted to finally be able to say yes! By taking Chinese for the past 3 years I have learned so much about the Chinese culture and it has helped me connect a lot to my heritage which is something I am very grateful for. There is not a very large asian population on Nantucket, and there is an even smaller Chinese one, so I never really noticed how many people speak Chinese. I mean I knew, but I never experienced it first hand. Over the past years I have seen and experienced just how many people off island speak Chinese and how popular of a language it is and I know that knowing it will definitely be helpful in the future.
