How was American Samoa founded?

It was founded by Polynesian colonists as early as 1000 B.C. European influence started in 1830's when English missionaries came to the island. U.S, Germany, and Britain competed to try and have an edge in Samoa. The country went through an unstable time period, including 2 civil wars in the 1890's. Agreement ended up being America and Germany splitting the island into the America Samoa (by the U.S Navy), and the Independent Republic of Samoa. Became closer to self governed in 1966 by ratifying a Constitution. It is considered part of America, but not a state nor are the citizens U.S citizens. The economy is partially dependent on U.S help and American Samoa is not as developed as American itself. This answers how it was founded (by Polynesians in 100 B.C) and what it is regarded as by the American Government. Also shows how the American Samoan government has evolved to more self governed since the 1890's.

How have the United States and American Samoa interacted?

American Samoa was useful in one way for military training to help in World War 2 vs. Japan. American Samoa was also on high alert for an attack from the Japanese, and was a major strategic location for the war in the pacific. America was convinced an attack would happen on the American Samoa so they added many troops and ships there, also because of the location. The Samoans helped also by feeding the soldiers. Eventually they felt safe enough to remove lots of the military from the Samoa, and it was peaceful for the rest of the war. American Samoa ended up being very necessary in the war effort, providing better positioning and resources to support the war effort. This shows that American Samoa was seen as useful by the American government, and contributed the war effort overall.

American Samoa has a governor, Senate of chiefs, and a House of Representatives. They have their own language, but most citizens speak English too. American Samoa is home to at least 65,000 people. However, about 56% of families live below the poverty level, and it is a majority agricultural society. American Samoa also had its own cultural celebrations with singing, dancing, and sometimes involving the village ceremonial princess. They celebrate Flag day on April 17 for when it became an American territory. It is a relatively poorer island that has some aspects of American culture ( like speaking English), but also has its own style. That style is in forms of celebration and government. The American influence on the traditional Samoan culture is having a governor, speaking English, and the legal system which is modeled after the U.S.
