Essay questions are a great way to get students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills simultaneously. Historians need to present both basic information as well as draw connections that can be easily understood by laymen; essay questions offer opportunities to do exactly that. Additionally, "targeted" writing, that is, writing that is in response to a specific prompt, is also a skill that will be invaluable outside of school. For more advanced writers, it also provides an opportunity to find their own voice.

Similar to what I said about essay questions, thesis writing is incredibly important in the field of history and communication. Thesis statements allow students to practice developing an argument, and perhaps most importantly by organizing evidence to support their claim and evidence to attack opposing claims. Both skills are valuable outside of the classroom, and can be translated from writing to verbal and other forms of communication. Historians often need to break new ground in old fields, and do so by challenging the establishment with a new thesis. Students will do the same.

Thesis writing is particularly important in history as a discipline, because the way we read history, is nothing more than a particular author's interpretation of the events. Students can be empowered to learn, they can do the same! They can create their own claims and interpretations of primary source evidence, with the correct use of a thesis. This chapter in particular is useful in modeling for students what that looks like! Which is HUGE. Students often think writing is a talent you're either born with or born without, but of course, it is just a practice.

Whenever we are breaking down thesis statements and writing thesis statements, I have my students follow this checklist and color code each piece of the thesis statement. Once students write a thesis statement, I have them peer assess each others thesis statements using our rubric or the checklist in this reading. I do not put the student's names with the thesis statements to allow for anonymity and allow for honest discussion. Students write feedback on the papers and then the next day I return the thesis statements to each student.

I can see where facilitating the kids to really look how they find and process information can be amazing by increasing their disciplinary literacy. Having kids choose a topic or a focal point in a topic creates ownership. I also think that allowing kids to find an area of focus that they are interested in could go a long way to getting past the "I hate history" mentality. I think that this might be a good project to replace the formal essay I usually assign to my 8th graders.

Essay questions can be considered one of the best ways not only to assess how students are learning the topic or information given to them, but they also help students grow as writers as well. When identifying an essay question, students need to follow a step by step process in order to full understand what the question is asking. For my class, I personally like to use essay questions as a helpful strategy and skill to expand my students knowledge on a history topic. As mentioned in The Write Path book, there would be steps to follow in order for students to excel. Just like in a formal essay for an English class, a student in my history class would follow these guidelines (outline, creation of thesis, first draft, etc.). This upcoming school year I will be teaching 6th grade History so the writing process along with identifying an essay question will be shortened up a little bit.

A thesis is crucial to identifying the purpose of the writing and what will be talked about throughout the essay.

This strategy will allow the students to engage in a more difficult topic without the overwhelming burden of writing an entire paper. It is like a modified essay but getting students to engage in the critical thinking component of history. It also allows students to break down the steps into more manageable chunks and opens the door for more differentiation for the students ability level. This method also engages with multiple primary sources.

How will you use this strategy in your content area?

I would like to implement this when we work with DBQs, especially in my World History classes to have my students start by working together on this and then creating their own, ultimately, I want them to be able to do this individually.

I actually found these activities to be engaging for students. The various types of poems students could create based off of our content would be a fantastic tool students could utilize in their notes. It would help associate ideas and concepts with people, places, and events.

While I was looking through the Modified DBQ- and about helping students to the next step of collecting their own research I thought- oh, STOP. Like today with that great Rosie stuff- I could have the students get 1 document on their own. (after we have done the group/class assigned dbq) Then they would analyze their own document.

And of course, practice using level 2 and 3 questions so the students are comfortable creating their own questions for research.

I really liked the way this type of write could help students tap into SEL skills to better connect with the people they are learning about. For example, we plan to spend time looking at the perspective of Indigenous Peoples of Washington State pre-exploration and after, so I think this type of writing would help my students better understand what life was like before and after treaties and reservations. They would then be able to use this experience and knowledge to connect with their own experiences.
