As they try to run away, Jem’s pants is caught in the fence wire; the children leave Jem’s pants at the Radley’s and run away. 
 A crowd of neighbors surround the Radley place after the sound of gunshot, and the children pretend to be innocent. Atticus and grown-ups ask whereabouts of Jem’s pants; Jem and Scout panic but Dill naturally tells Atticus that he won Jem’s pants from playing pokers.
