2. In San Francisco Maya felt like she belonged there because she fit in at the school and learned to use her voice and speak up for what she believed. 

Character: 
Mrs Kirwin had the biggest impact on Maya when she was in San Francisco. Mrs. Kirwin, her teacher, taught her the value of loving everyone even when they don't have the same skin color as you.
