Creating the right learning environment can help influence the way students are learning.Teachers having the knowledge and training of classroom management can also help improve student learning. Linda Darling Hammond states that"Among other things, knowing how to plan and manage a classroom allows teachers to focus on the kind of complex reaching that is needed to develop higher order skills.(p.209)"
Teachers can use "tools" such as specific reading or writing strategies to help drive their literacy instruction. Knowing how to use all of the instructional materials and educational resources can make a difference. This could include using the resources for reading and writing and having knowledge of what you are teaching. This is keeping in mind that students all learn differently and how to differentiate your instruction based on that.
Making the content you teach relatable to the students' lives can help them make a real world connection to the information. There are a few articles attached to this section that give great information about teaching and building relationships.

In the Flat World text, it states "As reading expert Dorothy Strickland notes to teach early literacy, teachers must be able to accommodate a variety of cognitive styles, and learning rates, with activities that broaden rather than reducing the range of ways students are invited to learn and respond.(p.210)"

"Nations that have steeply improved their students' achievement, such as Finland, Korea, Singapore, and other, attribute much of their success to their focused investments in teacher preparation and development." (Darling-Hammond, 2010, p. 194) The United States is lagging ongoing support for preservice teachers entering the field of education and sustainable professional development for experienced teachers. Staff development should be designed in a coherent way that promotes continuous support that is embedded and promotes highly effective teaching strategies. One way to adequately conduct PD is to provide the opportunity for peer visits allowing educators to see each other and provide constructive feedback within their building and beyond. This serves as a professional development task that promotes a learning community and an environment the supports professional growth.

According to Linda Darling-Hammond schools in the United States are giving more low-level, multiple choice tests every year. We often limit our curriculum to tested subjects and use these tests as punishments for students, teachers, and schools. Standardized tests are given too frequently and take up too much instructional time. Standardized tests can deliver great data but we get the data too late to use it. We need data in October not in July or August of the following year. Most countries only give one or two tests before high school. These tests consist of open ended questions, opportunities for problem solving and conducting investigations. The tests test what they are teaching and what students need to be able to do to be successful in our ever- changing world. They are testing the ability to problem solve and communicate. According to Linda Darling- Hammond, “ A number of studies have found achievement gains for students in classrooms that offer a well-taught problem-oriented curriculum featuring performance assessment (page 69).” Thoughtful assessments given and received in a timely manner that can be used for student improvement, not punishment are needed in the United States. Thoughtful assessments can tell a teacher if a student is struggling and if interventions are working. Countries that are showing success in the field of education (Singapore, Korea and Finland) use far fewer and better designed tests. They are testing higher order thinking skills. Our students are growing up in a world where they will be working with knowledge that has not even been discovered yet. We must teach them and assess them with this in mind. Low-level multiple choice tests do not predict their future success. In order to raise the achievement level in the United States we need to move to a different assessment system in which students are able to show what they know and be able to develop questions, conduct experiments, and show communication and problem solving skills. Our tests must reflect the skills and knowledge that we value as a nation.

Darling-Hammond made a strong case for more in depth training for America's teacher candidates. She shared how Finland, South Korea and Singapore required more hands on training for their teacher candidates in order to raise student achievement. What We All (Supposedly) Know About Being Poor: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Ruby Payne's "Framework" examines how American teacher candidates need more effective training teaching students from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds rather than relying on the shoddy research methods of Ruby Payne as a foundation for teaching practices. American colleges must require more hands on training of future teachers through more field experiences with highly qualified teachers instead of teaching mere theories from Ms. Payne.

In Overcoming Generational Poverty, Beegle devotes a section to the teacher's role in either helping a student overcome poverty or helping a student feel that school was not going to make a difference in his or her life. Darling-Hammond examines the effect of a truly effective teacher on a life of a student in poverty and even directly links student achievement with a teacher's experience and education. Teachers (as evidenced in both the article and the book) can be the biggest factor in whether a student fails or achieves success in school.

Establishing Curricular goals with high expectations for all students in the 21st century requires a shift. According to the Flat World text, "70% of U. S. jobs now require specialized knowledge and skills," forcing educators to "prepare students to work at jobs that do not exist yet" (p. 2). Unfortunately, for many students who attend schools in poverty, the types of courses that promote these 21st century skills has been "rationed out to the most advantaged students" (p. 54) and those from less affluent backgrounds tend to be tracked in more "remedial" classes, or instruction geared to "rote skills" (p. 55). Furthermore, those with limited English proficiency are also among those underserved with appropriate curriculum and qualified teachers. The ripple of the problem continues back and forth in that some districts have difficulty staffing these rigorous classes for these populations, as they are "undesirable assignments" (p. 66). Success stories of schools that meet the needs of all their learners realize the importance of "well-prepared teachers...high-quality curriculum, supported by appropriate materials and assessments" (p. 193). To remedy this situation, there must be changes in how resources are allocated, teachers are trained (and continue to be trained), provision for recruiting quality teachers and retaining them, as well as the community investment of the teachers and administration of each school. Realizing the importance of shaping the future of society...should prompt deep reflection on what we want to invest in as a nation.

Inequity in Adequate Resources

According to Darling-Hammond, one cause (and perhaps the biggest cause) of educational inequity is the lack of adequate funding by the federal government. The majority of school funding is determined by states and then by local systems within the state. Schools can be within miles of each other and have more than a $5,000 per student difference in spending due to local taxes and resources within a community. Schools with more funding are able to provide their students with smaller class sizes and more resources, such as newer technology, more up to date text books and fully stocked classroom and school libraries. Beyond traditional resources, fully funded schools are able to secure the most valuable resources of all--highly certified educators. School systems with less funding have difficulty attracting and keeping certified teachers because these systems are not able to pay them as much and working conditions are often worse due to higher class sizes and facilities that are often in poor condition. According to Darling-Hammond, "...studies by scholars at the University of Chicago, which found that teacher education, ability, and experience, along with small schools and lower teacher-pupil ratios, are associated with increases in student achievement" (p.106) Student achievement is directly linked to having an educated, experienced educator! The student achievement gap will continue to widen between economically advantaged and economically stressed students until the federal government levels the playing field by fully funding all schools and pouring more resources into economically disadvantaged areas.
