A friend of mine drew this up and it reminded me of the concept symbolic interactionism. Symbolic Interactionism is the view of social behavior that emphasizes linguistic or gestural communication and its subjective understanding, especially the role of language in the formation of the child as a social being. When we see someone, we label them and therefore treat them the way that society has taught us to treat a group of people or person(s). The drawing shows a person drinking the bottle with a label. We label ourselves and others everyday. This photo displays my Vietnamese and Chinese cultures coming together on Chinese New Years. It is a right of passage to hand off red envelopes for good luck into the Lunar New Year. It is a tradition, and social norm for us to give, receive, and spread prosperity to others during the Lunar New Year. The reason why this reminded me of the world culture because this is a sign used by many Chinese and Vietnamese individuals as a sign of prosperity. The reason this relates to stereotypes for me, is that in society we all believe that men are supposed to be masculine. There is this biased opinion that men are strong, while women are vulnerable and fragile. I feel that in society today, it is hard for men to express their emotions because they're supposed to be strong. If they cry, it makes them "gay" or "weak." I feel that some, (not all) policemen are abusing their authority. We look to these people for safety and the amount of times I've heard of police brutality on the news is sad. Not to mention the abuse of authority in our justice system. Where exactly is the justice when it comes to cases like these? An innocent boy who was just talking on the phone with a friend, carrying an iced tea and skittles. Martin was shot by George Zimmerman, as a result of racial profiling. He found Martin suspicious for just being a black male walking around a nicer neighborhood at night. The judicial system did not hold Zimmerman accountable. There are so many injustices when it comes to blacks. We feel pressured to fit in, or be cool. This especially attracts younger crowds when it comes to drinking or smoking. They are too poor to provide for their families. Too poor to have food, and clean water. It is a real issue that most of us in America are lucky to not be living through it. As you can see, all of the children share one ration. That is what gets their meals and that isn't even enough for a growing child.
