Language extinction

As I don’t feel sure on how to integrate TOK, I looked for activities in “Think IB”. Here you have the link to the first activity in case you want to use it: https://www.thinkib.net/englishb/page/1931/language-extinction

It is an article about language extinction which I am sure my students would find interesting, because our mother tongue is a minority language. The first task is reading the article, which also deals with grammar: statement verbs, summary and direct quotation. The second task is considering a list of key phrases from the text and asking students to think of critical questions related to them.

This activity could be dealt with in the theme “Identities”.

Another activity that could be interesting to deal with would be, after the presentation on how to convince their fellow students to incorporate insects into their diet, they could write in groups a TOK question for another group to address the topic, for example: Why do we accept some animals as food while we find others disgusting? Why does this change from culture to culture?

This activity would be in the theme “Experiences”.

An activity related to CAS that I’m going to do next week with my students is the following: I have invited a woman from Georgia who lives here in Spain and volunteers internationally. She is going to tell my students her experience and she’s open to answer any questions they may have. I think we can link this activity to CAS, because of the volunteering and to two themes: experiences, because of the volunteering again and identities, because she’s currently living in a different country from where she’s from.

The extended essay in English has its idiosyncrasies, so I think the first thing we should do with our students is to explain to them very well the four options they have and it would be a good idea to give them examples of each type, so that they can understand better. Then, as an activity to check comprehension, they can give ideas of extended essays for each category, making connections with the themes and topics worked in class.
