1. Classification
    - The 'Us' were the people with the government and the government itself. The government then defined the 'Them' as people who weren't indigenous to Cambodia, and that citizens of Cambodia had tainted by these outside Ideas, especially by the capitalized west.
They also classified anyone who was in opposition to the government, which was mostly educated people. Many religious and ethnic groups were also persecuted, such as Buddhists.

2. Symbolization- Eric Yu
-The Khmer Rouge classified by religion and ethnic group, The new people were marked for heavier labor, less food, and harsh treatment. In addition, people from the Eastern zone were given blue and white scarves to wear.

3. Discrimination
    - The Khmer Rouge regime targeted various ethnic groups during the genocide, forcibly relocating minority groups, and banned the use of minority languages. The Khmer Rouge also banned the existence of ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese, Muslim Cham, and 20 other minorities, which altogether constituted 15% of the population before the Khmer Rouge.

4. Dehumanization
    - Patients in hospitals in the middle of operations were forced to leave, and to die. Women in labor were made to get up and walk and their new babies died in the hot sun. A whole infant ward at the Calmette Hospital was abandoned when the Khmer Rouge forced the people working there to leave.

5. Organization
    - The Cambodian government started separating children from adults and separating families. They also classified "old people", who were considered to be peasants. As well as the "new people", who were considered to be city dwellers. With this, the Khmer Rouge gave better treatment to the "old people".

6. Polarization
   - People were sent to live in communes to be reeducated and were divided based on how much trust the Khmer Rouge could trust them. The most trusted were "old citizens", and people who supported the West and city dwellers were "new citizens". "New citizens" could move up to "deportees", next "candidates", and finally "full rights citizens". Most "new citizens" however, did not move up. - Eric Yu
-The Khmer Rouge separated families, children, and adults. In the Tuol Sleng prison, they documented and photographed prisoners. They organized the people further into children, young adults, and elders.
   - Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge began spreading propaganda. They handed out a Little Red book filled with propaganda. Some of the quotes from it include:

"You can arrest someone by mistake; never release him by mistake." (p. 208)

"Better to kill an innocent by mistake than spare an enemy by mistake." (p. 209)
"Better to arrest ten innocent people by mistake than free a single guilty party." (p.209)

7. Preparation
The Khmer Rouge forced an evacuation of Phnom Penh. This is urbicide to the area. (intentional attempts to destroy or annihilate a city). "Killing a city" or urbicide gave the Khmer Rouge control of the entire city. With this, they were able to make a national assembly in the city. This helped them in many ways, producing weapons and other various goods to assist with the genocide. In addition, the Khmer Rouge had many plans, such as the eradication of Vietnamese Communists in Cambodia.

8. Persecution
Khmer Rouge targeted various religions and ethnic groups while they had power. Religious Enthusiast, Buddhist, Christians, Muslims, Ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese, Thais, and Cambodians with Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai ancestry. People from the Eastern Zone of Cambodia were forced to wear blue and white scarves for identification. Many people were also sent to communes for "re-education".

9. Extermination:
    - The Khmer Rouge used things such as forced Labor, where they made people work long hours from dusk to dawn, and starving them in the process where they would get little food rations, and weren't allowed to grow their own. Mass executions, where the Khmer Rouge attacked both people who opposed them and the Chinese, Vietnamese and Muslim Chams.
    - Toul Sleng was a school that was turned into a torture and killing center. Under the supervision of Kaing Guek Eav, at least 12,272 people were killed at Toul Slang. There are only seven known survivors of Toul Sleng. In addition to this, the Khmer Rouge started slowing and secretively killing off Cambodians who were trained by North Vietnamese communists.

10. Denial - Luke
       - A few months before his death in 1998, Pol Pot was interviewed by Nate Thayer. In this interview, he not only denied responsibility for this huge genocide. But also denied the fact that there even was a genocide. Pol Pot states that he was there to came to carry out the struggle, not to kill people". According to Alex Alvarez, Pol Pot "portrayed himself as a misunderstood and unfairly vilified figure"
