In the late 16th century a new religious sect arose called the puritans. They believed the Church of England was too similar to the roman catholic church. The Puritans unsuccessfully attempted to reform the Church of England, but were instead persecuted. As a result the puritans were forced to make the voyage across the Atlantic. After finally reaching the Americas, they began to settle in Massachusetts where they setup their own puritan colony away from external persecution.

Witch Hunt

The picture below depicts one of the many Salem witch trials. During these trials women and sometimes men were accused of witchcraft with no evidence. After being accused they were brought to court and strip searched in order to find a witch teat, which was usually just a mole or freckle. Then they would pole the teat with a needle and if it didn't blead they were deemed a witch. During this time over 200 people were accused and 20 executed. People began to use the trials against their enemies falsely accusing them of practicing witch craft simply because they didn't like them.

Elizabeth Hubbard is best known as the primary instigator of the Salem Witch Trials. She was known for having uncontrollable fits, claiming it was a witch controlling her. Hubbard accused over 40 people of witch craft, 13 of which were tried and hung. Hubbard had newfound power which she abused. Following the decision that the trials were a mistake she never apologized for her wrongful accusations.

There were several reasons it was possible for the witch trials to happen. One of these reasons was the puritan idea that Satan was alive and actively tormenting people. They also believed that Satan would recruit witches and warlocks to aid his schemes. When something bad would happen the people would blame Satan, and eventually other people they believed had caused their misfortune. This lead to strong paranoia and fear of other people due to fear of being accused of witch craft.

Author of the play The crucible, a story depicting the horrific events that occurred during the witch trials. Miller wrote the crucible during the cold war, a time of fear from the unknown communist threat. During this time people were accused and arrested under suspicion of being a commie spy. Miller wrote the crucible to show how similar the communist hunt was to the witch trials. Unfortunately his play never received any real success due to people fearing being accused of being a communist.
