There are many examples of good practice in the health and social care space that supports the green transition, however these examples and stories are often under – narrated. There are also imbalances in who is telling the story linking to challenges around power and representation of seldom heard voices.

A key challenge is how might we better embed and amplify the impact of the work that is already happening, as well as work that is emerging, to better shape sustainable health and social care futures for NHS Scotland.

How

This Working Group aims to be a platform to support green transition initiatives in the health and social care ecosystem, offering a space to share and amplify narratives of progress.  A goal might be to highlight solutions, and the individuals or teams behind them, providing inspiration and actionable insights for the community. Through this work we aim to inspire and guide others toward sustainable practices, which are informed by design.

We will bring together a community from design research, sustainability leaders, NHS professionals and industry, who are committed to a sustainable and thriving planet.

Key potential outputs

One example, we might build case studies focused on positive change, exploring the strategies to get there.  Through this working group we aim to inspire and guide others toward sustainable practices in health and social care.

Whilst there is significant work being done to achieve policy commitments and implementation, better connections with design could accelerate the green transition by simultaneously enhancing collaboration and engagement, prototyping solutions, and envisioning multiple futures, leading to greater policy impact.

Through this Working Group we aim to align design and policy through knowledge exchange, providing exemplars of progress and insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and designers, effectively integrating design thinking to support a just transition.  Exploring the policy implications of design principles to achieve net-zero emissions and fostering increased collaboration and partnerships between design stakeholders and policymakers to support net-zero initiatives.

Key outputs foreseen (further defined by WGs)

This could be through the creation of a tried and tested repository of design led tools for health and social care related policy commitments and implementation that can better enable the inclusion of a futures and just transition lens (beyond an economic lens)
