The friend arrives at The House of Usher. He describes the house from the interior. The friend describes the house as a, "Gothic archway...the carvings of the ceilings, the somber tapestries of the walls, the ebon blackness of the floor, and the phantasmagoric" (Poe, p. 324). He describes that the house has many dark and mysterious items, no light or bright things. The friend entered a room the meet Usher. The friend said that Usher had a vivacious greet. The friend describes Usher's face expressions and looks. He said that Usher had an inordinate feature. He also says that some of Usher's feature don't seem like they pair up, but they do strangely.
Usher finally spoke to the friend. The friend describes Usher's action as lively and his when Usher spoke, his words were always a "tremulous indecision" (Poe, p. 325). Usher's presence through things weren't so well. The friend compared Usher's presence to flowers. When Usher enters a room, flowers don't have an aromatic smell to them. It seems as though, Usher has a dark and bad ora.

The story has supernatural events constantly occurring throughout the story. When the narrator arrives to the house you can sense an eerie and an uneasy feeling. In the story, the narrator explains the house and the details of the house. "While the objects around me---while the carvings of the ceilings, the somber tapestries of the walls, the ebon blackness of the floors, and the phantasmagoric armorial trophies which rattled as I strode" (Poe, pg. 324). The narrator also explains how the house feels and the way he feels while entering the house. "I felt that I breathed an atmosphere of sorrow. An air of stern, deep, and irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all." (Poe, pg.324) Gothic Literature often tries to reproduce the mysterious atmosphere suggested by mysterious settings. within the story there is a supernatural setting " the windows were long and narrow and pointed and at so vast a distance from the black oaken floor as to be altogether inaccessible from within"(poe,pg.324). the characters also have dark feel " the now ghostly pallor of the skin and the now miraculous luster of the eye above all things startled me even more"(poe,pg.324).

Trish Trinh
1) The friend describes Usher's appearance and the way he talks and does things. The friend says the way Usher speaks, his words and thoughts were very indecisive and dark. He said, "His action was alternately vivacious and sullen" (Poe, p. 325).
2) The house is a mystery. The friend described a room to be, "...very large and lofty. The windows were long, narrow, and pointed, and and at so vast a distance from the black oaken floor..." (Poe, p. 324). Throughout the whole story, the friend mentioned that many things were dark. There were hardly any lights, maybe a flash or dim of light from the window.
3) Poe describes Madeline in the tomb creepy and mysterious. He said, "The body having been encoffined..." (Poe, p. 329). He said that Usher and his sister look pretty alike. It may seem that Madeline is portraying Usher's future. Their appearances seem the same. And their vivacious actions as well.
