Saint Jerome was a highly accomplished scholar. He has the second largest collection of works of Medieval Christian writers.
His largest contributions were his translations of biblical text and saints writing. One of his most renowned contributions to Christianity were translating parts of the Old Testament from Hebrew to Latin. He also translated Origens works from Greek. He translated the Gospel from old Greek texts to Latin. He was a critical figure in the forming of the unified Latin bible. This is hugely important, as Italy being the centre of the Catholic world to this day, partially due to their accessibility and exposure to St Jerome's pieces.
He also held classes focused explaining the bible and its relevance to the Rome, shaping the way society interpreted bible texts. He also answered people's questions of the bible, such as if St Mary was virgin.

Saint Jerome was born as Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus on the 27th of March c.347, in Damaltia (which was then a Roman province and is now Croatia). Part of a wealthy family at the age of 12 he travelled to Rome to study. He spent the next 20 years travelling. At the age of 28 Jerome retreated to the desert of Chalcis in a search for inner peace. He spent the next two years are a Hermit, during this time learning Hebrew from a converted Jew. His time was not easy however and he had to beg for food, despite this he claimed he was happy. After leaving the desert for Antioch he became a priest in the year of 378 on the conditions that he would not be mandated to follow the behavouirs and laws of priests. In the following years Jerome dedicated himself to his scriptural studies. In 382 Jerome returned to Rome to become secretary to Pope Damasus II. His works here caused much controversy causing St Jerome to depart for the Holy Lands. He left in 385 with a company of the virgin women who followed his teachings in Rome, the most prominent of whom being Paula. In 386 he arrived in Bethlehem where he lead the construction of a monastery and convent. St Jerome remained in Bethlehem until his death, on the 30th of September 420, at the age of 73. He is the patron St of archaeologists, archivists, bible scholars, librarians, libraries, school children and translators.
