These new ideas reject the ideas of materialism that previously acted like guidelines for the dream in the 1920s-1930s.

What does the American Dream mean to you?

To me, the american dream has meant many things through my life, when I was growing up a teenager it was just to get to college, as a wife and a mother later on in my life my own American Dream was to make sure my kids were safe and could accomplish anything.

Has that meaning changed throughout your life? Why or why not?

The dream has definitely changed throughout my life. As I've grown up and gotten older I realize what is more important to me and that is my focus.

Do you think that you have been able to achieve the American Dream?

Yes, I was very blessed in that I could achieve the dream myself and then go on to help my own kids in achieving the American Dream

Were our ancestors able to achieve the American Dream? Why or why not?

I would say that they did, even though it was much more difficult for them being that they were the first generation immigrants but they were still able to provide and live comfortably.

Do you think it is harder to achieve the American Dream today than it was in the past?

I think it depends on your situation. Overall, in the past the outline of the american dream was simpler and included things that were moral goals rather than owning things but if you were an immigrant at this time even accomplishing those moral goals was difficult.

Do you think I will be able to achieve the American Dream?

Yes, I think that your parents have set you up to where you have access to plenty of things that will help you in being successful.

What are the steps that you think I need to take to achieve it?

Like anyone trying to achieve a goal or dream, you need to work hard and use adversity as a motivation to do better.

Do you think the American Dream is achievable for any American regardless of their background?

Yes, as long as a person can work hard and work up from their place in society wherever that might be, they should be able to achieve the American Dream. It might be harder for some than others, but it is always possible.

My grandpa came from Sicily Italy when he was about 18, from there he met my Grandma. He started a small business fixing heating systems, air conditioners, and plumbing problems. They owned cars, a home, and were able to send both my dad and aunt to college. In the time that they were raising their family the American Dream was to do the things that he was able to do. I would say that my Grandpa was one of the hardest working people I know and that is how he achieved the American Dream for his family
