This is the perfect time to implement different classroom management strategies, different daily activities and routines, etc. Take this time to revamp your classroom structure, and give yourself some time to get creative and learn more about your students. You're meeting them in person for the first time!

Continuing the lesson and activity format from remote learning into hybrid will help students transition. It will also keep things consistent. For example, in 6th grade readers and writers workshop, we do the read aloud, mini lesson, and time individual and/or small group work, and I have been doing this in remote learning. Keeping the mini lesson short will allow for more time on working, and this structure can be done in hybrid. For social studies, I have been doing many projects and that is something that can continue into hybrid learning, like Danielle mentioned in her post.

Much like the first days of school in September, it is important to take everything slow. Establish the rules and routines of hybrid learning. Walk students through their procedures for both in-person and online learning. Play some icebreaker games to help students re-adjust to being back in person. It is essentially the first day of school all over again, so take your time easing into the content. It is more important to establish routines and continue to build rapport.

General Ideas for Hybrid Learning from SS Perspective

After talking with other teachers who have been working in the hybrid model, looking over different resources posted on here, and doing some of my own research, here are my ideas:

1. Start class with a common prompt to all students emphasizing interaction with teacher and classmates (Google Meet chat, Google Classroom comments, Google Form, Padlet, etc.) Discuss briefly
2. Instruction time should be fairly brief and delivered to the entire class. If it can't be brief, then it should be done on full virtual days (Monday and Friday)
3. Hybrid days should take advantage of having students in the classroom to : A. take formal assessments - especially for students who need modifications : B. work in groups on performance tasks, activities, brainstorming, discussions, etc. C. build teacher-student rapport
4. Hybrid days should end earlier for virtual students to do asynchronous work (maybe 15-20 min early using EdPuzzle, Flipgrid, teacher prepared videos on Screencastify/WeVideo etc.) and then the teacher can focus on just the live students for the end of class to build relationships

Difficulties with mics (teachers have told me that students in person will speak in class while the virtual students can't hear them and so teacher will have to repeat constantly what is being said) Mic feedback among students may also cause an issue
4.

I asked a couple people who have been hybrid for most of the year what their tips are. One teaches middle school French and the other teaches middle school Language Arts (but the same readers and writers workshop curriculum). Some things they suggested are...

From the ELA teacher:
-My favorite tip/suggestion- when teaching hybrid, don't sit at your desk in the back. You won't see your students. Stand in front of the room where the students in class can see you. Have your chromebook on a stand next to you, and angle the chromebook towards you. That way, you can address both groups. Also, keep normal eye contact when talking to in person kids and remote kids- it makes school feel normal and interactive.
-When the kids come in to school, have the remote kids already on Google Meets and post a question in the chat for them to discuss (something fun like favorite food) while the in person kids unpack.
-Have in person kids on Google Meets too- it's easier to communicate with all. Only one person should unmute at a time.

From the French teacher:
-Keep the structure and format of the daily activities the same during hybrid so you don't overwhelm the students with too many new things.
-Keep activities simple so they are more streamlined for both in person and remote groups.
-Limit lessons to 10 minutes and spend bulk of class time on kids doing activities.
